1802 Dime Newp, Guess The Grade.....Grade Posted

I'll post the grade at some point tonight, probably around 10 eastern time.

This was an impulse buy not too long ago. It's in a PCGS slab. This is JR-2, an R-5 die marriage. It has diagnostic wear/strike patterns to keep in mind when grading. image

I suppose its possible to upgrade this coin, but right now I'm ok with it at FR02. The difference between the obverse and reverse is amazing to me. I am curious to find out what the other grading services would grade it though. image

Edited to change thread title and to post slab pic with comment.

I believe I recall seeing that one. FR-02?

The funny thing with this series is that few R5 die marriages demand a large premium.
I don't believe this die marriage is one of them, but I could be wrong.

It's just nice to see one of these in a low grade which isn't totally beaten up! image

Having just graded and priced a bunch of these [and half dimes] for a dealer friend, I can say these are very tough to figure out as so many are split grade. I would say that it looks nicer than FR-2 to me. In my opinion, it has a FR-2 obverse and a G-6 or VG-8 [given the strike/wear characteristics] reverse, so the net should be AG-3 or G-4. Still, it is hard to get over that obverse wear, so I'll settle on AG-3.
I just bought a JR-4, which is a vg+ obverse and vf- reverse. We settled on a f-12 price and I'm very happy with it.

Agreed, these can be very tricky to grade. Thanks for sharing your story, it would sure be interesting to debate the grade with someone especially in higher grades where the price difference could be substantial.

And STONE, thanks for the comments. I actually bought this as a BIN on ebay, raw. It was only listed for about 30 minutes (I think) before I jumped on it. image
