Junk Wax Gems: 6/12: 1988 Topps Doc Gooden variations + 1990 Topps John Elway Promo/Sample

Hello everyone,

From now on, I'm going to update this thread to reflect the current day's blog as well as keep a running list of past blogs.
I just wanted to re-introduce everybody to my junk era (1980's and early 1990's) blog.

For those just checking in:

I just recently revamped my blog, into a massive beast of little-known variation information. Hopefully, a go-to spot for error card and player-collectors as far as information goes. So please, do check it out and feel free to post any questions or comments:

Jackson- Funny that you started this thread today as I spent some time emailing Cosetta about a 90's variation earlier this afternoon. Here's my question- 1991 Topps has a Lonnie Smith variation whereby on the back of the card, the # of games played in 1990 reads "135" instead of "136". Last year, I created a Braves team registry set from 1991 Topps Desert Shield and I included both the "136" and the "135" variation in the checklist. After years of searching I have never seen the "135" variation in the Desert Shield set, so I asked Cosetta to remove it from the set checklist earlier today. I checked with a few other Desert Shield collectors and all of their Lonnie's were all "136" as well. Do you have any knowledge of this Lonnie Smith variation and whether or not it exists in Desert Shield? Furthermore, do any of the '91 Topps variations follow through to Desert Shield?

I think that Desert Shield cards were all stamped from a specific run/printing of 1991 Topps.

Base 1991 Topps is weird. Some variations were printed, seemingly, at the exact same time. As if 2 presses were going and cards coming off of each were going into the same boxes or cases. This accounts for there being both versions of the McGwire in Desert Shield form.

Many of the other variations though, are from different times in the run and possibly even from different facilities, such as the Robin Ventura (who despite what the registry or any one else says, does not come in a full red border version) or likely, the Lonnie Smith, Dwight Evans, 656 Checklist (Palacios # variations). If you have seen and heard-of numerous Desert Shield Lonnie Smiths and they all come in one type, I would bet that it's the only version printed of the card.

Until I find a Robin Ventura that proves me wrong, I'm sticking to that.

Exciting stuff! Wish I could afford some time to go through my '90s stuff to look for these and other(??) errors. Weather's getting too nice so I gotta work outside.

I've bookmarked your site, though, so as soon as I can justify it, I'm digging out my '91T hoard!

  • Today's Junk Wax Gems blog is a look at a 1989 Pro Set card that may have never actually been produced. An odd 3rd version of an already well-known variation in that set.

    << <i>Cal standing next to Gehrig’s Cooperstown plaque >>

That's not Gehrig's Cooperstown plaque, it's the plaque at the old Yankee Stadium.

I always assumed that was just a printing error, but I'll have to go through mine at home to compare. Last I checked I had almost 200 of these cards, lol.

    Well, I am embarrassed!

It is definitely a change in the plate or 2 separate plates altogether. One's orange coloring does not cover the entire "team box" on front, only the Orioles font. The other's "team bar/box" is entirely overprinted with orange.

The orange overprint type definitely seems to be the more common but I am very interested to hear what kind of ratio you find in your massive batch of them.

    EDIT:

Fixed the Cooperstown thing. Do you know who the original photographer was?

Don't be embarrassed, I'm a HUGE Ripken collector, this card has been my favorite since it came out, and I didn't know that wasn't the Cooperstown plaque until I went to the Baseball HOF in 2007! lol

On the "cards you've never seen" topic, it reminded me of an old mystery... who's the Yankees Rated Rookie on the box of 1987 Donruss? He's not in the set.

Wow, that's pretty interesting. Is there a list of contenders? Have the possibilities been narrowed down at least?
