Newp: Copy Stand and coins

Just got my copy stand in the mail today. A family out in Lynnwood, WA builds these sturdy, functional copy stands. Custom ordered mine with a 30 inch column for extra height if needed down the road. Took about 2 minutes to put together and two minutes to break down. Has full rotation in the joint that holds the camera so you can take horizontal photos and vertical photos (and just about everywhere in between). Very happy with this sturdy little thing and for $40 I think it is a really good value, especially for my first one. Oh, yeah, I also have some new coin purchases which I photo'd with my new copy stand. Here are photos of all (coin images weren't 100% properly lit. Don't really have the time to do it right since I should be studying).

Looks like a nicely machined copy stand for a lightweight point and shoot camera.

    What camera are you using?

As looking at the camera attachment I'm not sure that I'd chance using it with a heavier DSLR and Lens combo.

I've got an Olympus e-500 with a Sigma 105mm macro attached. I need to get one of the quick release dove tail attachments for the base of my camera but it held it nice and sturdy as is.

Good to hear as that's a lot of weight.

Nice image on the first pic of the 1924 Peace $1 obverse by the way! image

    Hey erickso1!

I had one of those stands, the man does fabricate them very well. image
The only problem is adjusting the height (mine was) and you should get a small level to square up the camera so there are no OOF areas on your coin images.

What's the name of the outfit that makes these?

It doesn't look like the base is wide enough to be stable support the weight of the camera and a large macro lens . Looks like if a house cat for example rubs up against it it would fall over. I'm not putting it down, it's just an observation based on your image. How heavy is the base?

The base is made out of recycled formica countertop, 3/4 inch thick, 10x15. Weight would be a couple pounds. Stand seems very stable with my Olympus DSLR and 105mm macro on it. The foot of the column is approx. half inch thick solid steel and the column is welded into that (not on top of). The foot is secured to the base with 2 10-32x 1 1/4 mounting screws. I emailed him and had him put a 30 inch column on it (extra $8 or so). I have absolutely no doubt as to the stability of this stand. It feels solid, has good weight centered over the column (the column foot adds a good deal of weight) and the pivots and arm that holds the camera all are solid.

I bought one of his stands back in 2007 - very well constructed and well worth the money. I don't use mine very often anymore as I was lucky enough to find a big Testrite model at an estate sale for $20. No, make that $10 as it was half off on Sunday. (noboby knew that that contraption was - hence the low price).

If you are in the market for a copy stand, this is one to consider.
