Are prices strating to climb again?

We all know that that with the economy and everything that coin prices took a relative hit and or flat lined for a while but the two series I collect (peace dollars and Trades) seem to be back on an upward track and as is normal, PCGS are bringing strong prices. Not only strong prices but the coins that I have watched in dealers innovatory are going at a faster rate than the past couple of months. Is this a figment of my imagination, isolated to a few series or is life picking back up?

Form what Ive been seeing peace dollars have been dropping for awhile now (ESPECIALLY Ngc high grade stuff)
that said, at the baltimore I am looking for a really nice ms66 peace dollar or if I can find one, a really nice 23 or 24 in 67.

The trade dollar series from mainly what Ive seen (and that has not been to much) also has been light. Alot of (smaller time) dealers have told me they dont have customers for trade dollars and are worried about chinese counterfits.

perhaps the china thing has left the area for awhile and maybe some people started picking the series up.

I would love to hear different opinions though
may the fonz be with you...always...

I can add another anecdotal price point. At February Long Beach, I bought a 1941-D Walker for a short set. It was on my list and I had a price recorded from an online seller that usually prices at sheet ask. I bought from a show dealer that also usually prices at greysheet ask. The price was a good bit higher than the price I had written on my list. So yes, there is some bounce. However, some other coins that I own that I bought near the peak, such as a San Diego commem, remain down 20% or more from the 2006 highs (based both on sheet and real world asking prices).

I have noticed that many high grade NGC coins do not bring PCGS levels where at the fever they held their own. This is only true for conditional rarities like peace dollars not true rarities. Why pay MS67 money for a coin that might only be a 66 on review. But as a whole look at collector grades for the AU50- Ms64 28, 34, 34s, any 27. They seem strong to me.

Prices are down for almost everything I collect. Pricing is about the same as it was 3 1/2 or 4 years ago.
  • I would say pricing is up even over the pre recession prices but sales have to be down as I don't think folks are ready to jump in and pay even more now then they did say a year or two ago....image

My sales have been mixed. I took a 20 percent hit on a 1909 S VDB but I made most of it back in my next 2 auctions.

While the overall market still seems soft to steady, the Peace and TDs in high grade
as well as DMPL Morgans with full 8" mirrors seem stronger. The best and the nicest
generally are the first to perk up.

i think itll be flat for a while longer. i think to that its part of the area that you are in right now. i do hope it stays strong for a while for that might be a tell tale sign image
  • I think the collector market is strong as can be considering all things.

I dont think thats driving the prices up though. I think the price rise can be the economy itself. People are buying gold and silver, and considering the recent threads about people buying pre33 gold and silver, I think its somewhat driven by investors.

Peace dollars and Trade dollars are bg, silver, and for the most part, (not counting some Peace $1's) theyre pre33.

Prices went down? When? Haven't noticed much of a difference in the higher grade seated dollars image
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

I collect the Jeffs in MS and Proof and the complete range of 'silver proofs' 1950-1964. Prices are down for anything bought in 2007/2008. Prices are steady to up from 2006. The FUN sale in 2008 appears to have been a peak for cameo top pops. I have been able to buy coins that I lost at auction in 2008 at prices about 20% lower. The just-under-the-top-pops have dropped about 25% from FUN 2008 timing. Proofs with milk spots are being hammered even at registry grades. There is a lot more selectivity even with the lower prices. You know, the old coin versus holder approach has really taken on new life. CAC is having an impact on sight-unseen purchases with CAC cameos commanding a premium for the grade. Sight-seen purchases of cameos are less impacted by the green bean.

MS Toner Jeffs have held up well and depend on the coin and toning. At least the premiums have not disappeared from anything that I am trying to buy.

    Comments welcome on the observation.
