Barfvader's Miscut Museum (200+ Scans) Updated On July 28th 2015

On the advice of board member K (suggesting I start a thread) and vladguerrero (to update a different thread) I proudly present the Miscut Museum.

So what's here and what 's not? Well although I collect all types of defects I'm going to stick to what I consider miscut in that another cards printing needs to be visible either front, back or both. Some are VERY hard to see and I have even had to look at a few several times to be certain but all here fall under what I consider miscut with the one exception being the 54 Topps card with the MC label for a bad cut as this is what PSA determined it to be. So extreme diamond cuts, blank backs, ink errors if not showing portions of other cards will not be included here. Edited to add: On occasion a bad cut will be included like the 2010 Topps card.

Edited on June 11th 2012 to add:
There have been many, many generous donations from many of the board members here and would like to thank them once again for their help in making this one of the coolest parts of my collection.

Big thanks go to the following (no particular order and hopefully haven't missed anyone so if I did let me apologize for the oversight)

Without the fine members here (past and present) I wouldn't have been able to build this collection to this point as I am so far from a card shop that I have no chance to go on a search so I really appreciate all the additions from the various members of this board and thank all that have helped add to this collection. image

Also a thanks to the many eBay sellers that I have had flawless transactions with in obtaining some of these beauties.

So it's been a LONG time since I was able to update this thread. For one reason or another I hadn't been able to get the time to do so but finally was able to squeeze in a few days to sort, rescan, resize and upload the many images that are in this thread.

So for your viewing pleasure (or displeasure however you view these types of cards) I present my collection. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do. image

Edited on June 6th 2012 to update all images and add many others.

image

Edited on May 1st 2014 to add:
These just in and at first didn't realize that 4 matched up (only thought 2 from the pic in the listing)

image

But unfortunately damaged backs.

image

But that's alright as it's pretty cool to think that someone had taped these together many moons ago (it is very old and very nasty tape) and probably was very proud to own them.

And these were also part of the lot.

End new arrivals

I loved the tour!! My favorite would have to be the 1980 Henderson RC! I saw a card in there that I contributed to the museum too! It's so hard to convince a seller at a card show that I actually WANTED that miscut card. lol

Thanks for listing the museum! image

That was a gift from a board member and he says it did in fact come out of a pack like that. Doesn't surprise me at all considering how horrible quality control was at Donruss that year.

And I appreciate all the comments.

Hopefully I will be able to start rescanning the rest sometime this week.
  • A very unique collection.

Jeff, is it like your holy grail when you find a run of several cards that continue from one card to another?

I think that is probably the coolest thing to come across. Imagine being able to find a complete sheet in this manner as it would be a blast to frame and display it.

It just amazes me that these ever got into packs, vending boxes and cut card cases. No way that any company has actual quality control.

sweet! i can vouch for the 81 donruss scrap....unbelievable what they used to cut back then.

    Thanks,

    Now that's something!

I'm thinking they should start a special section - the Miscut Registry.

Grade the miscuts by the degree - and assign a grade!

    Well done!!!!!

  • cool collection...

have you found that there are less and less miscuts from new issues based on quality control?

if so, you always have 75 minis to fall back on...
  • I really like the cards that were cut right down the middle and show 1/2 of each player. How do you decide who it is a card of? image

<< <i>have you found that there are less and less miscuts from new issues based on quality control? >>

It would appear that way. There are miscuts to be found in newer issues (along with missing foil/etc) but quality control (if it even exists) seems to be much better.

It looks like you have the top third of that 1976 Topps Joe Morgan right above it. Is it a perfect fit?

What do miscut collectors think about the people that buy uncut sheets and create their own miscuts?
  • BarfvaderBarfvader Posts: 2,859 ✭✭✭✭

<< <i>What do miscut collectors think about the people that buy uncut sheets and create their own miscuts? >>

Well that would kinda defeat the purpose as I would only want what could have been pulled from an unopened product (wax/cello/vending/factory set).

Good show. Some of that stuff is really bizarre.

    Question:

How do the diamond cuts come about during the printing process? Does anyone know?

I believe it would be when the sheets don't stay in the cutting machine properly (accidental shifting).

Had a really good friend in the 80's who had an Uncle that worked for Topps. To bad that the friendship just disappeared over the years as he might have had some great info.

It's funny isn't it but this hobby is more towards condition and eye appeal and to many these types of cards have neither but it's good for me as it's an affordable item I can collect and I really enjoy them which is what collecting should be all about.

  • I'm sorry to tell you but most of those cards are not considered miscuts. See, I was told by an executive at Topps during a quality dispute - If the entire image of the player is visible the card is considered within their quality standards.

I purchased two cases of Bowman Draft Picks with 90-10 centering and wanted the product replaced. I was told that grading companies had brain washed me to think every card should be centered.

I could care less what a supposed executive from Topps says. Of course they are going to say whatever they can to not have to replace modern product. And quality standards, well maybe they are getting better (they have obviously) but these images prove that quality standards and or quality control was bottom on their list.

And I can say for certainty that nothing in my scans is 90-10. I consider a card to be miscut in that another cards printing needs to be visible either front, back or both and every card with the exception of the PSA 54 Topps card with the MC label for a bad cut and the 1981 Donruss Bill Fahey scrap all posted images fall under my criteria.

But in the end, who cares? I'm having fun with something I enjoy collecting. But I do appreciate your comment on your experience with Topps.

All right! It's great to finally catch up with the infamous miscut collection. I've only seen it referenced once in a while, but somehow missed these pics. Thanks for taking the time to post your collection!

I've posted this card before which is a freak of nature. This is more of a printing error than miscut...
