Why did PCGS 94 this 85-CC Morgan?

I just got this 85-CC Morgan back from PCGS and they 94'ed it. What am I not seeing?

  • If 94'd means questionable authenticity, I disagree. Looks real and like a great coin. Really doesn't look like it has any problems.

94 is some sort of altered surface.

Hard to tell from a set of pictures, as some alterations are much more apparent only when in hand.
  • Wow you had me worried that we were back to the awful idea of a 100-point grading scale !!!

The graders most likely think the coin looks overdipped, thus the 94 (Altered surfaces) code.

Hard to determine without the coin in hand, but it looks like the fields may have been polished/whizzed to make it look like a P/L?

It could be "profiling". Maybe PCGS doesn't care for pierced ears.

I wonder is perhaps the frost was enhanced in some way.

94= Altered Surfaces - whizzed, harsh cleaning, thumbed over (using a pasty substance to cover defects or alter the appearance .
Hard to tell from the picture

  • so PCGS doesnt give an explanation along with the code? How does the customer know whats wrong?

On the obverse in front of the face maybe harsh cleaning, from the picture it is just hard to tell for sure.

The reverse wings tell me that it's been sandblasted to bring out the frosted cameo look.

Note the pitting to the wing feathers, arrow feathers and wreath leaves. Should not be like that with normal frosted CC's.

    Just my guess.

If you see "frost" in the hit on the first star and in the bottom loop of the first 8 in the date, then you have your answer.

I'm not an expert, but the hair in the area below and behind the ear don't look as struck and the pierced earlobe might be a problem too

‘cause they don’t have the testicles to simply print the reason on the holder.

The coin is likely to had been artifically frosted on the devices. Contact marks where there is a frost effect should result in frost breaks. It appears on some of the contact areas on the face the scratches and contact indentations have been "painted over" with the artificial frost.
