I was searching through my collection for attractive naturally toned coins, and found this one that I have not shared with my fellow forum members for several years.

I will be the first to say that I don't agree with the assigned grade from those pics

No matter what grade seems the most appropriate, it's a gorgeous coin. Wish I would find a CBH like this one searching through my collection!
    Congrats and thanks for sharing.

The old AU63. Regardless of the number it appears to be uber-PQ.

I'll bet this 186 year old sweety is gorgeous in hand! image

I suspect the patina blunts the luster moreso in the image than in hand. I see no obv rub and what appears to be trace rub on the wings, may well be strike. It is so tough to grade from an image.

Nice high grade broken 3 specimen!!
  • gorgeous coin... reflection of the light playing on the coin are probably what accounts for the appearance of rub on the high points... looking at the lower Reverse... it is definately a softness of strike there... from the top of 50 up to the lower wing feathers around the lower shield... a very nice coin...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

That is an outstanding coin. The Broken 3 variety is most always softly struck. I would love to own this one, worth at least $7,500.

    Gorgeous Broken 3!!!

I agree with Mozin, I would love to own that coin too.

Just curious, does she have any high grade (Patched or Ugly 3) sisters to hang out with?

Congrats Stuart on a beautiful and tough CBH!!

    Hey Stuart.
Nice coin. I did not see you post this beauty before.
These coins are tough to grade and unless you are aware of the striking
characteristics you will grade them wrong.
The lighting on these pics looks like it is almost straight on giving it the
appearance of a flat finish, but this is a really nice Broken 3 variety.
In fact, I believe this is the nicest Broken 3 variety I have ever seen.
I bet that coin has a shot at 64. That would be my WAG.
    Great coin Stuart.

Just thought it would be fun to look at this lovely 1823 broken three again. Its either tied for second or just slightly behind the Newman coin (now PCGS MS64) IMHO of the condition census. The picture suggests that this coin should upgrade sometime.
