Is anybody doing a "Type Set"

In coin collecting there are Type collectors who try to get one example of each coin produced.
I thought it would be cool to try it with baseball cards and wondered if anybody has ever attempted it or currently doing it?
If I did it I would probably pick a team theme like the Cincinnati Reds instead of just doing it willy nilly. It would be a great way to learn more about the history of the hobby and to be exposed to cards that I normally would never have went for.
I should have checked the registry in case there is a catagory for a type set. If not it shouldn't be that hard to set up. PSA would just have to list: T206, T205, 1933 Goudey and so on.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I think a set of cards with an example from each year and each company would be cool... like I say, I'm a little lost.

My PSA Sets
I do a few, one consists of 1 Topps card from every year 1952 to date.
Others include the following years card of the league MVP's, ROY's and CY Young winners.

Baseball has hofers with cards back to the late 1800s up to (essentially) present. Any card from the playing days of the hofer is fair game for the registry. As I add a card, I keep an eye on the sets that I'm missing. I'm still relatively loaded with T206 and '33 Goudey but if you look around, there is generally a lesser known substitute (often cheaper). This registry set is a great way to capture the history of baseball as well as the history of card collecting.

Always plenty of PSA-graded cards in my ebay store -- https://ebay.com/str/thelumbercompanysportscards
I had all the topps regular issues - until I sold off a 1953. So now that is incomplete.
I had all the Fleer baseball until it got crazy in the 1990's - too many sets.
I've thought about doing it for hockey, but I'm too far away to get any of the Parkhurst and 1954 topps.
I do have a excellent range of soccer cards from 1900 to 2000 (100 years of cards). In addition, I have cards made in over 19 different countries !
1. Vintage 18xx-1979?
2. Modern 1980?-2008
3. Master Set combing both.
There is probably more cards from 1980-2008 than there is from 1880's to 1979. I think it would be a daunting task to put together a modern type set!

<< <i>I know there is at least one gentleman here that is doing a White Sox type set exactly like what you are asking about. You may want to hit him up if you are looking for ideas. He posts a lot on the Mail Call thread and many of his cards are stunning! >>
That would be me. (BTW, thanks for the compliments Chris!)
I'm only about two months into it, and I'm having a blast - you can check the set out in my sigline link. I started it as a break from all of the Topps and Bowman sets that I am currently working on. The set is registered across the street; I don't know if PSA offers something like that.
Bunker, it sounds like you have a good plan in place. If you collect modern (postwar) cards and are used to picking them up in NM condition or better, you might have to settle (like I learned to) with VG grade cards for the prewar stuff.
Anyway, have fun with it, and don't forget to show off your pickups whenever you get them!
Collecting: Topps 1952-79, Bowman 1952-55, OPC 1965-71, and Pre-War White Sox cards
the PSA Ultimate Vintage Sampler on the registry is a great start!
I'm thinking about "Key Cards from the History of Topps Baseball"
The major card (or one of the major cards) from each set of Topps Baseball 1952-2001. Start it off with the first 50 years, then in 2011 add a card from 2002, in 2012 add a card from 2003... and so on, giving each set a decade to pan out the key card.
I've spent a good chunk of my day, since finding this post this morning, starting to compile my list given the following conditions:
1) The card will be the key card of the set, unless that athlete is already representing another position in the set (I'd just do the Mickey Mantle Basic Set otherwise )
2) Preference is given to RC or HOF, but with neither taking direct precedence over the other
I've got my list covered through 1994 so far, and Ichiro in 2001... still need to do some more research on the years in between. I'll post my list once complete to open up some debate.
So far, I already like my list better than the existing 50 years of Topps set currently in the Registry.
I'd recommend it!

<< <i>I've been working on a Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins type set from 1991 and earlier for a few years. It's a lot of fun researching the different sets and cards to purchase. I look for a shot which includes the insignias on the hat and/or uniform to get an idea of the styles of the era.
I'd recommend it!

That is pretty close, I will see which cards are missing from the list I posted. There may be a good reason for them missing...$$
