Redfield Dollars -- Is there a list of Dates that were slabbed in the Red Paramount Holders?

ConnecticoinConnecticoin Posts: 13,009 ✭✭✭✭✭
If one were to attempt to assemble a complete collection of Redfield Morgan and Peace Dollars in the red Paramount slabs, what dates are needed? Here is an example:

image

I cannot find any data source on the 'net that lists the dates. You can do a search on ebay to see the obvious dates (i.e. 79-S, 80-S, 81-S, 82-S, 90-S, 91-S, 96-P, 97-P, etc.), but there are a number of scarce dates (i.e. 92-CC, 93-CC) and Peace Dollars that were slabbed by Paraount as well.

I think it would be quite a challenge to complete a collection of these -- perhaps it has been done, but I am not aware of anyone who has done it.

I don't recall ever seeing one. The person who would know would be Julian.

    Numismatic News article had this:
'We have the total numbers and the reported sale price, but as Q. David Bowers suggests in his analysis in his book American Coin Treasures and Hoards, the actual breakdown of the 407,000 dollars is not known. He points out, “Contents of the Redfield silver dollar hoard were never made public.”'

  • I recall an article about the Redfield dollars in John Highfill's tome---it lists dates.

I just remembered there is a sectoin of the VAM book about the Redfield hoard. They list 42 dates that were distributed from the hoard. However, Paramount was one of three distibutors, and they may not have slabbed all 42 dates. Perhaps a complete list of the dates slabbed by Paramount is not readily available, but I imagine a handful of dealers specializing in these would probably have a complete list.

From the article I mentioned earlier here are a few numbers. No reference where they came from. I will see if I can get some more info...

    79-cc 400-500 coins
    85-cc 1 bag
    90-cc perhaps 2 bags
    91-cc 3-5 bags.

This does not specify holdered coins or not. I photographed a wonderfull 93-cc in the holder this weekend.

Yeah, in the VAM book they list all 42 dates and an estimated number of bags -- they probably lifted the list from the Highfill article. I don't know if Paramount holdered all of those dates or not, though -- the dealers that handle lots of these probably know. Are there any dealers out there that are known for specalizing in the Paramount Redfields?

"What every Silver Dollar Buyer Should Know" Steve Ivy & Ron Howard.........they listed all the Redfield Dates in their book. Yeah, funny thing a 3 year old thread.....Nice 87S. Most all the coins I saw were the scuffiest 65s on earth even for the late 1970s era grading.

Old thread, I know. But I went searching because I just picked up an 1883-P in a red Paramount Redfield holder. I searched the Heritage archive, and of 823 Redfield dollar sales, there hasn't been a single 1883-P. Nor on eBay, in their much more limited archive.

I found a link to a PCGS site that lists the dates that Highfill knew. No 1883-P listed there either, although that just appeared to be a list of the 10 most common, followed by the second 10.

When does a common coin become a rare coin? This could be an example...

Ah..never mind. I looked at again after reading a couple other threads. Mine is a Paramount Red holder, but it doesn't say "Redfield." Oh well....

    Thread revival for @Wabbit2313

Given you have the largest Redfield collection known to man, do you have an accurate list of all the dates that ended up in Red Paramount Redfield holders (a list of the greens and blacks would be a bonus!)?

Per prior discussions above, there is a list of dates in the VAM book, but nobody knew for sure if all of those dates made it into the red Paramount holders.

Just got a notification regarding the currently being released New York Bank Hoard of Morgan Silver Dollars. They are already specifying the dates and quantities. Should be a much easier task this time around. FWIW sounds like these are going to be even better preserved than prior hoards.

I'll list every date I have. I'll also dig up the original price lists, but there are dates that never made it on the price lists since there were not very many of them holdered.

Right out of the gate, the hardest Red Redfield dates to find were:

    1878-S
1885-CC (One just sold at HA for $7800)
    1890-P
    1890-CC
    1893-P

  • Blanchard Redfield was the first to start the hoard grading and holder coins .. Yes No .
I am looking for a list of dates in the hoard , Morgan and Peace dollars.

Wabbit never listed the dates. Now he is bammed :'(

From the Highfill book. Also have the VAM book that lists the dates but notes 1/2 bag, 1 bag, several bags, several dozen, many, etc so not that useful for how many. Hope this helps.
