the descriptions of the coins are among the best these days. I recall a recent Scotsman description that had no problem calling a PCGS-holdered coin "cleaned"

James cataloged 95% of the current sale, which is amazing considering that he has a full time day job. The combination of his impeccable writing style and numismatic acumen shines through in the latest catalog. I remember the day he approached Scotsman with the proposal that he write their auction catalogs....

With regard to Scotsman Auctions in general, they are the ones to watch in the auction business. They are honest and friendly people with a solid business model.
  • I like Jame's decriptions, check them out at the auction thats online now

I checked out the Scotsman auction, nothing of interest to me. Far too many lots are for multiple coins, and most everything offered is raw in CBHs.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

  • Scotsman also employs a guy by the name of Rick Raaf, their Senior Numismatist, and he has proven very helpful with information and advice in the past. He, like many of those who write on this board, is very willing to help a budding, young numismatist (like myself) out with a bit of guidance. As an aside, he also drives one hell of a fast bike. Yeah, that's him behind the handlebars.

By the way, I picked up this little beauty in the Scotsman auction in St. Louis on Friday - my first live auction. Yeah, I know it's a common date, a bit flat, and just XF details, but I really liked how it looked in hand - very original with striking cobalt and indigo toning. Not to mention it's all my meager budget could afford.

Unfortunately, the lot I bid on early went for way more $ than I thought it would. I had the high bid on it until the final day. And since I couldn't actually be there to see the whole LOT, it was hard to put that kind of cash on the line for a possibility.

They probably would have gotten a higher bid from me, if they had shown more coins with the kind of detail they used on just the obverses of these two.

Edited to add: Oh, and by the way... those that say prices have dropped... well, this lot was thought to go for a high of $550... it went for $750. Must have been something in there I coudn't see.

I bought the pcgs 1900 2 1/2 gold in 66 which technically blew away the other NGC 67 and NGC 68 coins in that series they had up for auction.

Yes, that was a very nice coin.

I bought three filthy, dirty circulated $20 Libs.
