Steve Hart writes, "75% of all stuff on ebay is resealed garbage".

Steve Hart, head pack authenticator for PSA and owner of The Baseball Card Exchange writes in his May 22nd blog that "75% of all stuff on ebay is resealed garbage." He goes on to say that he can't believe all the resealed and counterfeit packs and boxes that are being sent to him for sale.

He is getting alot of resealed mid to late '70's wax boxes, and vintage rack packs like '71 & '75 baseball and '68 football.

Steve surmises that people are buying alot of these bogus items real cheap on ebay and then sending them to Steve with hopes to make a profit.

Just be careful out there my fellow pack collectors when buying anything on ebay. Over the past year the economy has really deteriorated and by no coincidence during this same time period a flood of thieves have come to ebay to sell their bogus packs!

Im not sure why anyone that knows of Steve, would want to buy from anyone else. The peace of mind is worth the 20-30% premium that he mentioned in his BLOG.

These guys have proven themselves time and time again to be the CLASS of the un-opened material market.

Wow! To me 75% is shocking - I guess lots of theaves are making good money right now on eBay. That means hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of packs being sold on eBay each year... Ebay has become a nice, safe, and profitable place for pack stuffing criminals - if the number is that high some law enforcement agency really needs to get involved.

Sure he does...he wants folks to buy slabbed PSA unopened packs, and I agree with that. In fact, I think a 75% estimate on vintage packs pre-1970 wouldn't be close to accurate - I think it is basically 100% resealed from any dealer and almost all sellers offering pre-1970 unopened packs which are not slabbed.

    Yup.

It's the same dog that EVERY collector and investor has in the fight.

He - and WE - want to prevent the market from being destroyed by FRAUD.

  • Stevek I agree with you wholeheartedly. It has always been my belief that the majority of pre-70 unopened material out there is "bad".

Just as an example Dave & Adam's recently had on ebay some 1968 Topps baseball gai slabbed cello paks--all high grade. But with close inspection I could positively see "gum powder residue" tuck away in a few of the folds on the reverse of one pack in particular. Topps did not place gum in baseball cellos from the 1960's therefore there shouldn't be any residue in any of the cello wrappers.

These bad cello wrappers most likely came from early Topps cello rack packs containing three 12-card cellos with gum--1981 topps baseball is the favorite choice of counterfeiters in this regard.

This is not an indictment on Dave & Adams for they are selling the packs as represented authentic by GAI. So we know where the blame then lies. But if one of those '68 cellos were hand made then you can rest assured the rest were as well.

We've entered a time now in this hobby when one must be extremely careful especially buying pre-70 packs and yes Steve Hart wants people to buy his PSA slabbed packs--and I can't think of a better & safer place to shop!

  • So how does this compare to cards? How many cards sold on Ebay are trimmed?

I am sure it is bad on the 70s and earlier side. However, I imagine, and no disrespect to Steve, that 95% or more of the packs sold on eBay are more modern and the percent is not that bad. Take for example Upper Deck, the foil packs would be much harder to reseal, and most came with a UD factory wrap around the box.

75% however might be low on the vintage side.

I'd say 75% is definitely about right with regard to raw packs, and may even be a conservative estimate. That said, there are a number of dealers other than Steve Hart, whose product is completely legitimate and with whom I have dealt over the years with no problems whatsoever. You just have to do your homework and know who you're dealing with. After all, even Steve purchases his product from other unopened collectors before slabbing the packs or selling them raw..
