Ebay question-"Second chance offer" ( Ugly mistake on my part )

So I list a card on the Bay with a $299 reserve, a few days before the auction ends I decide I really want the card to sell so I lower the reserve to $285 as Im pretty confident that the bids will get to that point. The card ends up NOT selling with the highest bid going at $280.01, I check the bid history and the second highest bidd was at $275, Im not happy because it missed by under $10 and as I said I want the sale.

So I decide to venture in for the first time on the "Second Chance Offer" well I click on it and it offers me a few spaces to check so I can send out Second Chance Offers to the two highest bidders- at this point Im willing to except either $280 or $275 for the card, so I send the offers to BOTH bidders and go to bed thinking that since it appeared as a "Buy it Now" to both sellers if one buys it the listing will end right? WRONG I get home from work today and see that BOTH bidders bought the card!

$280 Buyer paid for the card via Pay-Pal and $275 Bidder didnt pay yet so I pack & ship card to $280 Buyer. I felt bad so I gave Buyer $275 a 10 dollar credit off of an another auction he had won and ended another listing I had that he was bidding on as well. I think Im at least making up for it to the $275 bidder ( I hope he sees it that way )

My question is why did Ebay allow both bidders to buy the card? I know I got charged for 2 sales- which cost me more money- anything I can do?

Ebay thinks at that point you have more then one for sale. That was one of the original
    reasons they created that option.

    Good for you.

Paul you will be charged final value fees for both sales, try and reason with the guy and ask him to sign off
and say the auction was canceled. (or whatever they call it)

    Good for you.

Is it possible to obtain another of that card in similar condition for around the same price?

Steve I might try and do that- like I said I gave him $10 off another auction he won also he was the only bidder on another card that I listed so I ended that auction as well- which had a few watchers and Im pretty sure would have gotten a few dollars more worth of bids. It was my mistake all the way and I wont blame him for being angry either.

In that case, your current offer sounds decent enough to me. If I were the buyer, I would have no problem with that.

    Got a response....

"Hi Paul, Not a problem. And I appreciate the gesture. Thanks for your efforts! "

Im glad he understood! Good people on Ebay are out there!

Paul...did your "gesture" have anything to do with the Perkies??

Ofcourse Nick, and it would have been deserved too. See I would have accepted payment from you and then pretended to send you the card.

Is the moral of the story to only send a second chance offer to one person? Just asking. Ebay should have this type of thing in place when the guy excepted the 2nd chance offer that eliminated any other bids. I forgot, that would make sense and we're talking about EBAY.

In punishment for your grave error, you are here sentenced to one perkies-less day

Don't worry Paul, I will take care of the Perkies while you are being punished image

    Ahhhhh Perkies!
  • This is another example of honesty working out. I'm glad that it worked out for you and even though the runner-up would probably like to have had the card, your explanation and apology made all the difference in the world.
I could have easily made the same mistake--A lot of 2nd chance offers are unanswered . What are the odds that both would buy the card?

And yes, it seems like ebay would be capable of canceling the 2nd offer when a 1st buyer responded. There could be a whole seperate forum on here called "ebay's follies" or What I'd change about ebay

I have made a similar mistake in the past.

I only realised there was a problem as I had about 5 auctions I was sending second chance offers for (as I had multiple duplicates of some of the cards) and I stopped to read the page to work out how I could send more than one second chance offer at once. It does state on that you should only send as many second card offers as you have extra items to sell ... but it's not exactly emblazoned in big letters!

    Thank you

Im really happy the underbidder was understanding in fact he was totally OK with it and very thankful for me making it up to him through his other auction/s. It sucks when you get edged out by a snipe bid let alone thinking you bought a card when in fact it was already sold!
  • Paul,
Glad this circumstance worked out for you, could have just as easily bit you in the Bum. I use the second Chance thing all the time (Still think it's a waste of time, may get 1 in 10 who actually use it), but anyway, I never send the second chance to two underbidders whan I only have one to offer, because I know how Murphy (Murphy's Law) works, and the first time I do that, they will both Buy It.

Totally understand the Murphy's law thing Neil!

Again though I was under the impression that since it appeared to both bidders as a "Buy it Now" that once it was bought by one of them the other one would end and it would not be available anymore.

Bottom line- lesson learned by me and I will not make that mistake again!

Is the buyer going to help you with the final value fees then?
