Twenty Cent Piece Question (revised)

Is there such a thing as a 1875-S PROOF ?

I was "reading the book" over at Coinfacts about the 76CC and it mentioned a 75-S Proof, but i wondered if it was a typo ?

Also, if I collect everything except the 76CC and all the Proofs, can I claim to have a complete set? Or what can I claim. I'm almost done with a top notched set. image

Does anyone have a 76cc they can share a photo of ? image

Yes, there are branch mint "proofs". They were especially prepared for some event or VIP. Usually given
to that person as a gift, etc. I've not heard of a 76-s BMP but they may exist. I do know that I've seen
BMP's from the Carson City Mint, so I do know they exist.

Since the branch mint proofs weren't officially sanctioned coins (i.e. reported to the Mint in Philly as proofs), I think it fair to say a "complete" collection could exclude it. To me it is a variety.

The only branch mint proof for the twenty-cent piece series was from San Francisco in 1875. There is no record of the coin's production or any ceremony, however.

No Carson City branch mint proofs were struck for twenty-cent pieces.

There are several mythological branch mint proofs floating around. All are mired in confusion, misinformation, assumption and layers of auction hype and wishful thinking. There might be some real “proof” or “master” coins made for branch mints, or even at branch mints, but the stories seem to evaporate like morning mist under sunlight.

Hard to believe that the 44-O $10 we saw posted last week was not specially prepared. While there appears to be zero documentation related to its actual striking, you have the coin itself which demands explanation. Same for the 54-S $20 in the Smithsonian, 56-O $20, and others. If these are merely P-L early strikes, how come they are all unique? Call 'em "master coins," or "proofs," or whatever you want, but there is something going on here that is not normal.
