Report from Silver dollar show in St. Charles MO - Daughter scores more gold

Rachel went to her first coin show today. Grandma gave her $108 for the show, and Rachel didn't know what she wanted. When she was told that they'd have all kinds of coins there, she said she didn't know what they looked like so she was going to look at them first. We arrived around 9:45 and by the time we where 10 mins into the show she went right for the gold coins. We looked around for awhile and a few caught her eye but daddy didn't like the looks of those so we passed. We finally came to a dealer who had a fairly attractive $5 gold coin that she really liked and looked decent. It was in an Anacs slab so I at least knew the coin was genuine. I asked Rachel if this was the coin she really wanted. She said yes, and I told her all her money would be gone (daddy had to give her some money but daddy didn't tell her that). She said that was fine, so we haggled out a price. With the price we paid for the coin, it was a good deal. She bought an 1882-S MS61 $5 gold coin.

Daddy had more trouble finding a coin, but I finally settled on a PCGS 1917-S AU55 FH Standing Liberty Quarter type 1. I really wanted a good example of a type 1, and this one has the FH designation.

Rachel also got some freebies. PCGS gave her a sample slab with a 2005-P Jefferson nickel with the Bison reverse. NGC gave her a Missouri quarter in their new slab, and the registration desk gave her an Alaska quarter. It was great watching some of the dealers interact with her. They would ask her what she was looking for, and she told them gold. You could see them kind of chuckle under their breath figuring "yeah right, this little kid doesn't have that kind of money". They would ask her how much she had to spend and she would shrug her shoulders and say her daddy had her money. Daddy, knowing that a certain little girl didn't have enough for stuff in the case was nice and secretly ups her amount, and I tell the dealer she has $300 to spend. You could see the jaws drop on the dealers mouths as soon as they heard that. One of them said they wanted in on how a 6 year old was getting $300 to spend. It was all a good laugh, and the dealers where surprised when she was pointing stuff out like the mint mark on the coin she was looking at, and if it looked good or not. I think some of them thought that she was just a tag along and not actually interested in coins.

She handled the show really well, and really didn't start to complain till about 12:30. That's pretty darn good for a 6 year old, so daddy didn't mind giving up that money to her. She definitely earned it with her attitude today, and she said she had fun.

The pictures aren't the best, but these are our 2 purchases. Oh, she just had to have 1 goofy shot also this morning.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

At least you can get your 6 year old to settle on a $5 gold, my 4 year old has her little heart set on a 1 Oz Panda. But she reminds me, she loves all money.

Rachel came by my table as well and examined a couple of gold coins, but I guess that she did not like them as well as the lovely coin purchased elsewhere. I was thrilled to see her examining the coins and am glad that she, with Dad's help, purchased a nice coin. I hope that she had a great time.

    I know that Daddy did!!!!

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

She had a hard time picking, and it came down to 2 coins. Yours and the one she purchased. Both coins looked about the same, and she based her choice on the other already being graded and encapsulated. Daddy doesn't know enough about gold coins yet to make sound raw purchases and she has observed daddy looking at the certified coins. After initially looking at yours, she asked me why they weren't in hard plastic. I had to explain this to her, and she nodded and proceeded to walk me around some more. With the profile of the show, I don't think we would have gotten a known counterfeit gold coin, but I felt a lot better when she went with the graded one. She really wanted both but she just didn't have the funds for that.

I need to get some more books about gold coins, because it seems that's the way our collection is going. I know there are some good deals to be had out there, but I need more knowledge in gold coins, because the cost of a screw up could be substantial. This is definitely not an area that you want to be treading without some solid knowledge.

She had a lot of fun at the show and I thought she might have been burnt out from coins after the show yesterday, but we stopped into our local coin shop to tell our local dealer about her trip yesterday and she bought some more coins. Nothing American this time, she went darkside and also got a sesquicentennial medal for the state of Illinois.
