I've been buying from JJ Teaparty for a number of years and I've
seen reductions on certain issues or coins but NOT all the coins in their inventory. This is a first for me.

that list seems like a sizeable amount of coins and i never heard of
JJ ever having a sale before either.

    Especially the recent LB shows.
  • David Lawrence is running a 10% promo also. I do think this means something. I have sold to DLRC many, many times and their buy prices are usually competitive. The offer they made me on the last batch I sent was WAY lower than similar coins in the past. They obviously did not want the coins. They sent them back to me, but I moved them fine at local shows.

  • Great. So now instead of mega mega retail prices it's mega mega retail prices minus 10%.

  • Ten percent sale? Well, now their stuff is only ten percent overpriced, instead of twenty.

It's great they're doing a 10% sale and all, but you can usually negotiate with them for 10% or more off at any time during the year.

  • OK ... I am going to be a bit of a b4st4rd here. However, I have to ask because I truly want to know: What is the deal with JJ Teaparty??? They have this phenomenal reputation in the numismatics industry, have been around practically since coins were invented, everyone loves them ... and, yet, almost every coin offered on their website looks like is was scrubbed to death with a cheese grater and then sandblasted with lava rocks. So, I have to ask those more knowledgeable than I (which is just about everyone), what is the deal with JJ Teaparty?

Here are just a few that I randomly clicked on ...

I agree, their pictures look horrible. I get excited reading a description, and then the pic is exactly as you described. And their raw stuff looks overgraded. That being said, I did purchase two coins from them with which I was pretty satisfied.

Fletcher--I somewhat agree with you except on a bit of a different front. Like you said I believe they have quite a good reputation in the collecting and dealer community throughout the US. However, I am from the Boston area and stop in there every once in a while. Back when bullion was going crazy and people were lined up with their 90% coin, silver dollars, silverware and gold teeth if you weren't there for that kind of transaction and actually wanted to look at a piece of currency or a commemerative mint coin they treated you worse than a homeless person hassling someone on the street. Miles Coggan particularly can be a real snotty person...I spend a good amount of my $$ with other dealers on the street and many of their other customers say the same thing. I don't know how the people are that they send to shows Gail and Liz Miles' wife I believe--they may have an awesome personality and actually act like humans but it's been quite a while since they've seen any of my money. In their defense, I believe it's Barry that works the storefront with Miles and he has always been pleasant and greets people by name if he knows them and cares to remember about what people collect and is very personable.

    Chance favors the prepared mind.

I've spent a lot money with JJ over the years...only though mail order and once at a show. (However, I'm actually in Boston this week, so I might stop by for the heckuvit.) Anyway, their pictures have always been really terrible. I've seen coins on their website that I've sold them and been like, "Wow, they botched that one." That being said, they have great coins and are pretty good with working on price. I've gotten quite a few nice pieces from them and their buy prices are usually pretty good.

  • Well, I'll step up to say this...

1st... they do not promote themselves as a walk-in coin store...they will let you know that if you want to view particular coins in hand at their shop, it is best to call ahead. The storefront is primarily set up for the bullion trade, which I imagine is their basic "bread and butter"...

2nd... while they do have strong ask prices...they also have strong buy prices... and Liz, who is their main buyer at the shows (along with Gail, on occasion) is a very friendly, straight forward person to deal with. She has a keen selective eye and she is ALWAYS busy at her table and when she can get away, walking the floor.

I was set up next to her at the last Coinfest and we barely had a chance for any social banter... there was a steady stream of buyers and sellers at her table.

3rd... their pictures absolutely could stand some improvement...yet their descriptions are accurate enough for me to rely on... along with their reputation and the fair way they handle their business.

I just emailed Gail this evening to order one of their coins...a tougher date I rarely see available... she replied within a few hours and the deal is done. The coin will be on it's way to me on Monday and they always pack safely and ship quickly. All in all, a very professional and polished organization.

I haven't had the chance to meet Gail yet... only have exchanged emails and spoke on the phone a few times. She did inform me that she will be coming along with Liz to the next Coinfest, so I will get the chance to meet her in person.

On a final note... as for approachability... I'd feel comfortable dealing with JJ Teaparty more than Stacks, anyday...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

OK Folks, lets get focused again, this is not about JJ, there reputation is fine. The question was is the recent 10% off there coin prices and followed by DLRC an indicator of prices finally falling. While I am one of those who believes values will fall like a rock in the near future, This is not the case with the 10% off. Both vendors have done this many times in the past along with L&C Coins and many others.

Personally I don't think that a 10% off offer on any coin suggests it is the end of times. To me it's a promotion, plain and simple.

I've purchased several coins from them over the last couple of years and in my case every single coin looked much better in hand than the picture showed. I just chalked it up to them not taking good pictures. Their site is one I check regularly.

I have purchased several coins from them over the years and always gotten nice coins for high prices. They used to have sales every year aroiund August/Sept I think. I think Ed was still working then and Gail was still with Dave Bowers. I don't think I ever got a bad coin from them. Some of the issue is the photography and some is the changing TPG grading standards. An AU bustie is still AU no matter what the holder says.

You couldn't ask to work with nicer folk than Liz and Gail. I've dealt with
Liz since the early 1990's before she married Miles.

Liz is a straight shooter and has a great eye - and easy to work with
whether you're buying or selling...she loves to buy back her own coins
when I upgrade...I've always felt well treated with her.

Gail has maintained my Want List for years and always lets me know
    - sometimes from the Bourse Floor - that they have something I may want.
You can't ask for better service than that !

Yes, I agree with the consensus here that they are higher priced but they
are willing to negotiate with you in a fair manner.

I also took advantage of their October Promotion - and picked up four Barbers -
which I have posted on the Barber Mega Thread. I probably would have gotten
the same price any other time of the year, but nice original Barber Halves don't
always come around too often. JJ Teaparty recently had one of the best groups
of VF/XF Barbers Halves certified by PCGS in recent memory. Now, the group has
been cherry-picked and I believe the NEWPS have all been sold off.

    I also agree, I would much rather work with JJ Teaparty than work with Stacks;
I have nothing against Stacks as I only buy from their auctions and my relationship
with them stems from my association with ANR and before that Bowers & Merena.
Prior to B&M, I purchased quite a few items from Bowers and Ruddy back in the early 1970's.

I dont know if their scans are so big that makes them look grainy, but when i bought my gold from them i stuck to the NGC and PCGS graded coins If the slab was in the # i wanted and the coin looked the part. I was happy to pay the money. BTW customer service from gail A class all the way .

over 160 rolls on 4 years and the rolls were capped off so there were "21' in most of them instead of 20!

I probably received 75 free Colombian halves or so from them!-awesome! image

I'm wondering if any collectors here have submitted to PCGS coins they bought raw from JJ and how they came back?

I have never received a body bag on anything raw that I bought from JJ Teaparty.
Then again they are a bit liberal in their grading but PCGS has come close
in all instances to JJ Tea's raw grades.

Once I purchased a raw 1905-O Micro O dime as an AU 55 from Liz, and I
requested that they send it in to NGC for their Variety Designation [ PCGS
wasn't offering it at that time to the best of my memory ] - and the coin came
back as an AU 58. I have since crossed it to PCGS and its still in an AU 58 holder.
I believe its a POP - One in AU 58.

I feel that they are very acurate in their descriptions and if the coin has anything
of concern, they'll be up front with you about it. As I mentioned before, Liz has a
great eye - and I trust her judgement.

  • With regards to David Lawrence Rare Coins, John Feigenbaum of DLRC, mentions in his latest blog (John's Ramblings, dated Oct. 20, 2008, on the DLRC website), that their volume is down 10-20%. I think it's quite normal to run a sale when overall volume is down.
