NFL Week 1

Two things stand out to me in Week 1.

I think the defenses are way ahead of the offenses for week one. I wouldn't lay any big points as I feel the big favorites will struggle to cover.

I think NE is off the board but I would not lay 16.5 this early. Brady didn't play much this preseason.

Payton didn't play at all and I think Chicago will cover the 9.5.

I know Steve Smith is not playing for Carolina for sucker punching a team mate but I would not take San Diego and give the 9. I would pass on this game, but if I had to predict a winner I would take the points.

Cleveland was so over rated last year and their record against winning teams showed that. 10 wins over teams with a horrible W-L record and all loses against winning teams. Look for that trend to continue this year starting with Dallas. I like the Cowboys giving less than a touchdown. (5.5)

Well there you have my thoughts. Anyone else want to share their thoughts for Week 1?

That NE spread is very high and based on last year's results more than on the reality of their present situation. I'd also expect NE to coast and probably rest Brady if they're up late.

The Eagles should breeze against the Rams with a very, VERY easy win - I think it may get ugly for the Rams, VERY ugly.

I picked the Eagles as my first team in the Suicide pools.

Detroit was actually a favorite and Houston was less than a touchdown underdog. There will be always be some blow outs, but looking to lay huge points in week one is too unpredictable.

In the other thread I picked Philly as the top lock of the week, followed by the Cowboys.

New England won but hard to feel good about covering with Brady going down in that game.

I still think San Diego will win but not cover. We'll know soon enough.

That's a valid point but I've been saying for many months that it's hard to overlook a strong trend, one of the strongest I have ever seen (that makes sense for a variety of reasons and not just random occurances) that the Super Bowl losers tend to perform poorly in the next season, and injuries are part of it because of just going through a tough 19 game season, along with the agony of losing the big game.

Ahh, the old Super Bowl hangover. I didn't even factor that one in. Good point Steve.

Oh please...like a "bad team" ever makes it to the Super Bowl - This has to qualify as worst post of the day.

Really, bad teams don't make it to the super bowl? You can honestly sit there and say the bears under rex grossman were a quality team? Please. >>

Their defense was awesome that year and a lot of the time defense wins championships. Come on now...you should know this.

<< <i>Their defense played well but nothing like the Bucs' or Raven's super bowl winning teams...they were a mediocre team who cruised through an incredibly easy schedule and got some luck in the playoffs. You think its coincidence they haven't been good since, and look even worse this year? >>

I didn't google it - but i think the Bears went 14 - 2, maybe 13 - 3 that year - that's not mediocre by any stretch of the imagination.

    Bears look pretty good tonight.

  • This was a horrible day for football for me. First of all the Colts lost. Second of all, everyone I had on my team (S. Jackson, Houshmandzadeh, Colston, Rothlisberger, San Diego Defense, Nick Folk, Brandon Jacobs) all were held under double digits (most were around 2 points). I had what appeared to be the strongest team in my league, and ended up with the absolute lowest score out of 10 people. I hope next week is better!

Anybody who would've bet $100 straight on all the dogs would've won around $400. Same thing will happen next week.

Way to go Lions, could not even beat the Falcons. Plus give up 300+ rushing yards, how bad can you get??

  • << <i>Bears look pretty good tonight. >>

Bears did look pretty good...and amazingly, my "local" team, the Chiefs didn't look bad. They pretty much held their own against the Pats minus Brady.

Did well FF wise. I drafted Forte on almost all my teams (which was not an accident) which really helped. The only FF team that lost for me is a league we have to pony up $100 a week....and I took Brady in the 1st round. (Had to scrambled and add Brady Quinn as my back up for the team and will be starting Garcia....so I hope to pull a 50-50 this year on that league.

I think that was biggest, "What the?" this week. Even if take away the two running touchdowns.

No, I think the biggest "What The?" was me coming out of a 3 year fantasy football absence to excitedly pick Tom Brady my first round pick, only to have my season completely killed within 10 minutes of the 1st round of week 1 games starting. Now I remember why I took a 3 year absence from fantasy football.
