<< <i>One can only hope that the referee is from France. >>
How many Americans who express a hatred for all things French actually know why they hate the French?

Probably the same amount who can recite the words to our national anthem.
<< <i>One can only hope that the referee is from France. >>
The ref was from Sweden, and the Cuban athlete kicked the ref in the face after the ref DQ'd him after taking more then the
1 minute allotment for injury time. The DQ was within the rules.
The Cuban athlete and his coach are facing a lifetime ban from the sport internationally.

What did the coach do to get a possible banishment?

For some reason I don't think a nation that pours ranch dressing on its fried potatoes is going to find this all that unpalatable.
What did I win?

In all seriousness, I think they astonished the world with their ingratitude when they pulled out of NATO in 1966. There wasn't a lot of anti-French sentiment in America before that.
I thought it was poetic justice when they refused to let us use their air space as a short cut from England to Libya in 1986 when we bombed Qaddafi, and then accidently bombed the French embassy in Tripoli as well.

Ah ha! All true, but this wasn't the question. There are some very good reasons not to like the French (or at least their government), but I was just speculating on what might be the % of Americans who heard from Jim Rome/Jimmy Kimmell, or someone like that, that the 'French suck', and have taken this as their personal rallying cry despite having zero idea what the French might have done that is considered so distasteful.

What unusually weak and spineless acts have the French committed that you personally find so offensive? I come from a long line of French-haters, so I'm always interested to see why others also dislike them.
Actually, why would I even care???? ::::eyeroll::::

Dien Bien Phu
<< <i>Yes, I run into french haters every day. I wonder why also.

THEIR WOMEN....HOW MUCH FOR THEIR WOMEN!!
<< <i>Well, unless you hate them and dont know why then they may be cheap. But please tell us why you want the women? I would be interested to know why you want to know about them. They have never done anything to you. Shame on you! tsk tsk >>
I WANT TO BREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED WITH THEM...... HOW MUCH FOR THE WOMEN!!!!

I don't know much about Dien Bien Phu, except that it's where the 20th century version of the French army met their Waterloo (pardon the lame pun). What exactly happened there?

That's a great point. Thanks for putting this whole thing in perspective. I mean, who needs to be jerking around on the Internet talking about the French when we could be scouring cyberspace for free samples of peel 'n stick graphics that picture pro athletes (in uniform, no less!).
I suppose I could have made a wisecrack about the Cuban, but my wife of 22 years was born there so I held back. Besides, I'm a HUGE Ricky Ricardo fan.
<< <i>When I made the crack about the French I meant it jokingly. Obviously such a statement has undertones of a potitical bias which I now regret having displayed. I don't regret my opinion of the French, I just wish I hadn't expressed it on this sports talk forum. To everyone who "tunes in" for sports talk, I apologize. >>
Don't be ashamed, it's chic to hate the French.
Regardless of where one is from, or your political opinions pertaing to that particular country,
how can anyone accept the vulgar, horrible, reprehensible action of kicking the referee in the face ?
That is in no way comparable to fights among participants, both being trained atheletes,
an attack on a figure of authority in sports is truly the act of a coward, a proof of a lack of disipline, a valid reason for a lifetime suspension.
The Olympic "spirit" is harmed forever, not great for millions of young people watching, to see how Olympians respect authority.
Parents may hope their children respect and show consideration, towards their teachers, clergymen, policeman, and elders in general, this kind of thing makes common decency more difficult to promote.
I would hope the referee involved, may be able to take legal action, physical assualt, possibly with a deadly weapon, was certainly evident.
What unusually weak and spineless acts have the French committed that you personally find so offensive?
I never said I hated anyone, or that I personally found them spineless, I simply replied as to why I think many people do.
Steve
I read he was from Sweden.
Steve
The point is an Olympic quality athelete going after a referee, kicking him in the face, is loathsome, beyond words.
Of course hitting an Ump is despicable that goes without saying. (from anyone from any level of play)
Steve
I truly meant not to antagonize, or quibble over minor facts, I sincerely apologize for giving that perception..
Perhaps I am over-reacting to the lack of reaction by most.
The shortage of real outrage or condemnation of such an act is hard to understand. To somehow minimize the despicable behavior, to make light of it due to the French being involved, makes me wonder about peoples' priorities, values and respect for sportsmanship, and common human decency.
Children from all over the entire world, were able to witness this "Olympic" moment. If it can happen there, maybe it is possibly okay to kick your teacher in the face, if you really think he has done you wrong.
Oh well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion or reaction to this event.
