You know you're in the United States when Usain Bolt runs a 9.69 in the 100 meters, setting a world record, and it barely makes the front page of ESPN. I guess it didn't help that Tyson Gay didn't even make the finals.

The lack of interest can be explained by the name.

    Most Americans would say "who?"

This is the Michael Phelps Olympics for most Americans, anyone else is just a footnote.

Well it is because NBC is all Phelps, all the time, including his mother.

When Bolt wins the 200, he will get gobs of attention, but I think they will be replaying that 9.69 numerous times now as well.

That 9.69 was the most impressive sporting accomplishment I've seen in a long time. I really wish he ran through the tape to what his time could have been. I think he could have posted a time that wouldn't have been beaten for 20 years.

BTW - how crazy is it that 20 years ago, any time under 10 seconds was considered exceptional....now it would get you smoked by 10 meters!!

Yep, I AM in the United States -- and I'm damn glad to be here.

Perhaps you'd find it more appealiing to live in France, French Laundry. BTW, isn't "French Laundry" an "oxymoron"? (i.e. a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms are combined).

Someone starts a thread bashing the US when in China they would shut down the website and imprison anyone who posted negative comments

The guys and gals at ESPN are too busy sending love notes to Brett Favre and don't have time to cover any sporting events.

Track and field events have been so tarnished over the years by doping incidents I think the sport has lost a lot of
its ability to impress people anymore.
  • Bolt was extremely impressive, however I was not impressed by his showboating and thought that he was somewhat rude in his post-race interview. I understand that the athletes probably don't really want to be interviewed right after they win, but everyone else is doing it and being respectful. I thought he came off from the whole thing as quite arrogant.

+1 for giving us the definition of oxymoron. I think most of us were totally in the dark when we first saw that, so the accompanying definition was quite helpful.
