ROY thoughts?

artistlostartistlost Posts: 2,242 ✭✭✭
the season is wrapping up (well not really but it's the final lap so to speak) and thought it might be fun to talk about the possible ROY winners for the AL and NL.

My take...

Evan Longoria for the AL
Geovany Soto for the NL

Thoughts?

I think this is the way it should go, although Galarraga should snag a couple A.L votes if he keeps at his current pace. He's 9-4 with an ERA in the low 3's.

I agree. I also think that Jair Jurrjens will get some NL Votes, but not enough to pass Soto. Jurrjens is 10-7 with a 3.12 ERA with an almost a 2-1 strikeout/BB ratio.

Jurrjens is the best thing to happen to the Braves all year. We got rid of Renteria, who's having a horrible season, and got a great young pitcher. Tigers blew that one.

Agree with Soto, but would hold off on Longoria. Too much of the season is left and he's been a 270 hitter last 30 days, but I suppose with all the publicity he's garnered he will get it. A. Ramirez of the Chisox is 11th in the AL in hitting and has played a mean 2B and his stats are on the way up as he's only had 303 AB's. If he continues on this course he deserves some consideration.

Sorry, Von, but I've already established a rule that nobody is allowed to speak of Jurrjens on these boards. Or Renteria.

Not sure how being a .278 hitter hurts his chances....he's a rookie. Anyway, his .352 OBP more than makes up for the sub par BA. He plays a key role in the Rays lineup, is 6th in the AL in HRs, 10th in the AL in extra base hits, 10th in SLGing, and is Gold Glove caliber at the age of 22 playing one of the hardest fielding positions.

Ramirez has a nice BA and HR totals for only playing in 70 somethin games, but has a 4:1 K to BB ratio, a lower OBP than Longo despite the Batting Avg, is thrown out stealing 42% of the time, and has a below average FP at 2nd base. Probably doesn't help him in the voters eyes that he'll be 27 by the end of the season either.

Does Ramirez deserve consideration? Yes. But he'll have to go on an absolute TEAR to take it from Longoria.

Are there any other AL guys out there besides Galarraga or Ramirez?

He doesn't stand a chance because of the season that Longoria has had and because he plays for the Royals, but Mike Aviles at short could get some consideration. In the 55 games since they brought him up he's batting .330 with 7 homers and 31 RBI. Most people don't know anything about him and are pretty surprised when they see him play.

  • Joba's still eligible correct? I'm pretty sure he threw less than 50 innings last season.

It's a shame he had to go and get hurt. On second thoughts.........no not really image.
  • I'll go with Longoria and Volquez.

Volquez last few starts have been rocky but he is still on pace for 18 wins and 200+ k's
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
Volquez would be a lock, but he doesn't qualify since he pitched 33 1/3 innings in 2006 and another 34 innings in 2007 so he's over the 50 inning max.

Boo-Sorry, I only obey rules I believe in or if there is some benefit to following those rules. If you'd like, I'll strike Jurrjens' name from my vocabulary if you send me a 6-pack of something nice . . . something like Chimay sounds good. image

Take heart though, he's only 2-4 in his last 6 games. Never mind the fact that he's had a pretty respectable 3.57 ERA in that stretch.
  • Longoria and Soto. Sounds good to me.

    Interesting.

What's the rules for position players?

This is Soto's fourth season in the majors, so just curious.
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
Position players have to have fewer than 130 ABs and I believe Soto only had 80 combined ABs before this season.
  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,098 ✭✭✭✭✭
Mike Aviles would be AL ROY if Trey Hillman hadn't stuck with .155 hitting Tony Pena Jr. for two friggin' months.

I love it when one of you guys posts a barrage of stats and you practically regurgitated my general point. So here's some more stats for ya courtesy of Jayson Stark:

I think Longoria is clearly his TEAM'S MVP. But he's not the league MVP. He's hitting .235 with runners in scoring position for one thing. He's only 38th in the league in on-base percentage, 15th in OPS and 19th in runs created per 27 outs. So while he's a great, great player, he isn't having as good a year as all the players I named in the lede-in to this debate. He might win five MVP awards before he's through, but not this year.Ifyouwanttojustargueforarguementssake

My only point in my post was that it was too soon to anoint him. Ramirez doesn't have to go on any tear, Longoria just has to keep up his last 30 days. Anyway always fun to argue.image
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
IrishMike: Do you mean ROY or MVP? I don't think anyone considers Longoria even close to being the AL MVP.
  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
ROY I was using the Jayson Stark example of how you can argue any award using whatever stats you want to prove your point. Goot made it sound like I was advocating someone else when in reality I was just simply stating its too early to know. His comments sorta twisted what I said, like I was choosing one over the other when what I was only doing was offering an alternative to OP's original question. I guess we could all just agree with the obvious response and end the conversation when a thread like this is posted, eh?? image

I suspect the answers to this question might start to change now:

    Longoria Goes on the DL

OK...what do people think of Votto for the NL ROY instead of Soto?

Votto has been htting at a wicked clip now and has some impressive numbers.

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
    149 519 67 153 31 3 23 82 58 102 7 5 .295 .367 .499 .866

  • As the season comes to an end Soto and Votto have very similar numbers. Votto has forced himself into the discussion for NL ROY.
However I think Soto will win comfortably becausee of the market he plays in and the position that he plays.

Not going to happen. Soto's position and contrabution to a great team will push him over the top.
