There is an awful lot of red showing at the top of 1900-present Type...

I see you 100% guys are busy updating and upgrading, while I'm stuck in the doldrums at 95%, lacking only 3 coins: one clad, one silver, and one gold. Need a Type 2 Bicentennial clad Ike, a Barber half, and a w/Motto Saint. I can forget about the silver and gold for the moment, but I guess I'll have to troll eBay for that clad Ike. I can afford a PR68 DCAM to fill the hole, anyway. Anybody got one to sell?
Durn Ikes are so hot these days that it's tough to get 'em at PCGS trend price or less. I was lucky to pick up the scarcer Type 1 clad Bicentennial Ike in PR69 DCAM at the FUN show for a song. Trend price was $240 at the time, and a dealer had one in his case for $120. I almost bought it on the spot, but on a whim, I offered him $100 and he accepted cheerfully. I was a happy camper. If any of you have gone Ike shoppping recently, you'll know what I mean...
I see none of you Olympian Dwellers of High Places have kicked me off the mountain yet- I am still #10 on current finest (though I slid to #11 on all-time). I might be at the foot of the mountain, but I am on the mountain nonetheless. Time to start climbing. I might eventually make it as high as the timber line, where a Rocky River flows. One thing is almost certain about my journey. I will never make it as far as the High Desert at the top of the mountain...

Some coins that seam simple are proving challenging to get a decent example at a fair price, such as the no VDB Lincoln.
I have dropped from #3 to #9 because I chose thematic (as in no proofs). I have enough proofs to knock Carl down a notch, but I want to stick to my guns. However, when summer rolls around, I will probably upgrade all my AU gold to MS-62 or 63 depending on the issue.
Keith
Guess what? I like weighting as I should gain a little there. I've got DCAM or FH where the other set doesn't.
Wait a minute! What happened to DaBigKaHauna? Now I'm 7'th.
What happened to that Type 2 SLQ? Did you ever get it in your hands?
Keith
The top 5 stays red almost every time I look. You are doing great. I have been holding at 18th with a couple upgrades only, in the last few weeks.
Keith, Hold on a little longer. The non proof sets are a commin, plus the basic set I believe.
Didn't I see you guys on NGC?... Opps let the cat out again
Brian, Nice 1908 no motto. Congrats on a real nice looking coin.

My Washington Type B/C Set
Another big coin in my set I am wavering on is my recently-acquired 1907 NM $10 Indian. It has a noticeable hairline on the cheek which is probably why it went MS62. Otherwise, it's nice. I paid too much for it, so maybe I should live with it. The hairline screams at me, though. (Looks really severe in my pic, not quite as awful in person). Keith, if you are ready this summer and the hairline on my $10 Indian doesn't kill it for you, then she might go live with you. Who knows? (You'd have to make her promise not to run through the briar patch anymore, though...)
I might forego selling anything until the set is complete, then I might do some switching around and upgrading. I might dump the proofs and go for MS coins one of these days. That's a tough decision for me.
I bought my St. G just to go into this set, now I need more of them. US coinage has gone through some very beautiful series, and this set is a great way to get a nice example of each of them. When I finally finish this set, I might just get bold enough to try the Copper
Nickel and Silver Type Coin Set (1792-1964), but that won't be for a while.
For now I am holding at 25 and waiting for the next beauty to find its way into my collection.
I think I'll start looking for a 1917 T2 in MS 65 FH. I am going for a certain look. I am just not seeing many T2 SLQs of any kind.
That Rocky River set used to be named NY Memorial. It has been upgrading pretty quickly.
Great work gang! Keep it up.
Sorry to hear that you didn't like that one in person. Scan made it look pretty good though. I don't think that I have seen many of the Type 2's that look real good come on the market in a while. Maybe one will pop up at an auction down the road for you.
LM,
I'm debating whether to upgrade everything to MS-62 (although the NM $10 Indian is probably too pricey right now) or whether to pick one or two coins and go for broke and get a MS-65. Liberty $2.50 or either Saint are pretty affordable in MS-65. The only coin that I am sure that I will do something with is my $2.50 Indian in AU-55. Need everything in at least 58 or better and it looks out of place.
Keith
I like the gold type. Are the 62s much less than the 63s?
I am learning what market grading is. Those Saints are so big and gold is so soft and those rays so vulnerable it seems they allow lots of marks on them even in 65. I want to upgrade my no/motto Saint from 62 to 64. I kind of want one of those no/motto Wells Fargo 1908 Saints in MS 66 but that would break up my 1907 date set. The '08 in 66 appears cheaper than the '07 in 65. Choices, choices...
There lots of modern types that are very cheap in PR 69 DCAM so I know what you guys are saying. But when you go back some the proofs are more than mint state. I admit I cheated by buying early Lincolns and 1913 T1 Buffalo in MS. I could upgrade my Buffalo to MS 66 for two hundred but to upgrade to PR 66 would cost me two thousand. Ultimately I want every type in proof where available. Admittedly most coins in the modern set favor proof buyers.
Flash - of the top 10 it looks like Larry (Dabigkahuna) isn't there anymore. I don't know if it is an error or if he deleted his set. Not sure what happened below the top 10.
We have a nice 1959-present set where only the MS coins get to compete. Fortunately, I get to still be competitive in that one. Otherwise, I just plan to keep saying that I have the highest Modern set 1900-present that does not rely on proof coins.
When the surveys came out, I pointed out that by adding 2 points to pre-1978 proofs, it would make it harder for MS collectors, and I think that we will get a split in the Type sets. After all, should my PR-68DC 1964 Kennedy that cost $325 be worth 70 points while a MS-67 at $750 is only worth 67.
I thought about changing out the set, but all of my pre-64 coins were MS as well, so I would have to get too many proofs, even if in many cases they were not cost-prohibitive.
Keith
Even many of the 1960-1964 proofs are not bad in 68 or 69DC. So Lincolns, Washingtons, Roosevelts, Jeffersons, and Franklins are doable in proof. Once you get earlier than that, proof collectors have their work cut out for them. Although some early series like Barber halves can sometimes get a high grade proof cheaper than a high grade MS.
Saw that Larry was gone as well, but he managed to squeeze to #3 before he did it. Interesting.
Keith
As to the discussion on MS62, that grade has become a standby for me, at least in the gold. MS62 is a compromise of sorts-a great value, usually- lotsa bang for the buck (just like AU58). Eventually I will try to upgrade some of my 62's, but others (like the NM $10 Indian) are likely to stay MS62 in my set. The NM $10 Indian, like many gold coins, makes a rather sickening price jump when one goes from 62 to 63. (Sickening if you don't own one, I mean. If you do, then I guess the big jump in value is not so sickening... )
Of course we miss Larry having a set around. However, with so many people registering Type Sets at this time, it's getting hard to remember who has one and who doesn't. When the boards first started up, there were only about 15 people with a set registered, so it was a lot simpler back then to remember who the competition was.
Keith
By the Time PCGS has gotten all the new bugs worked out and the sets in place and weighted I will be back in the Modern Type Sets. Even though I may be leaving the this Modern type playing field with all you Big Guns I am still the BIGKAHUNA of the $5 MS Gold Eagles! SSP. I have to wait and see how things play out for now. I knew going in that doing the 1900 Set and the MS Set would be a big streach for me. I was getting to far ahead of myself and to spread out in my intrests. Time to regroup or maybe that's recoupe? Thats not to say it wasn't a lot of fun. I learned a lot and I hope to use that knowledge on the next set. The next thing to do is step outside and see what that bright warm shinny thing in the sky.

Dabigkahuna
After all how many PR69 Sacs are there? Compare that to how many MS68 Sacs. Of course then throw the wrench into the mess, how many PR70 coins are out there?
It will be interesting and I am chomping at the bit to get some new coins added. I went to my coin store today and was getting ready to do some trading for a 1901S $5 Liberty. I think I almost have that one in the bag.
When weighting comes, it will be the grades of the gold pieces and the Barber coins that separate the pack. Looking at the weighting I came up with earlier in the day, a PR-70 Susie gains 3 points on my MS-67 Susie (weighting of 1), but if I buy a MS-65 Saint, that would gain me 21 points on someone with a MS-62 (weighting of 7). So someone who buys good quality gold will be able to catch up on the sets that may have lower grades. Of course, with my plan, it will still take about 10 years to catch up to where I want to be.

If this is the case, I might tumble a slot or two, depending on the competition. I've been strict with myself about sticking to MS62+, though I certainly have nothing bad to say about AU coins. They were tempting, in fact. AU58 is a wonderful grade for the money.
Brian- you made a good point about the no-VDB Lincoln. I too thought it would be simple and it turned out to be quite a challenge. I eventually settled for a 1911 MS65 RD from Heritage, though it is nowhere near as red as I would like.
I am anxious to see the weighting for this set, it will be interesting.
Hopefully alter today I will have added some images to my coins.
The thread on "Type Set Weightin Idea" has some theories on how those slots are going to be weighted. My guess is that the final product will be something similar to what I or Clevegreg suggested as far as weighting.
Keith
I just closed the gap between us a tiny bit, Keith- though it looks like it will take another coin or perhaps even completion to push me any higher. That ain't gonna happen anytime soon, as far as I can tell. I should end up with 96.49% when the addition goes through, with 66.36 average and 64.03 ranking, if I crunched the numbers correctly.
Just a Barber half and a No Motto Saint remain. Though the right Barber for me is elusive, finding the coins should be easier than finding the money to buy them with...
I may (Never know with Heritage's inventory) have upgraded my Walker from 64 to 66 today with this.
Keith
Looks like there might be some nice color on yours. I can't help but wonder if they won't be prettier when you see them in person. I look forward to seeing your own picture of that coin when the time comes. (I assume that is a copy of the Heritage picture?)
"Nice color" might be turn out to be an understatement on your new Walker, come to think of it. I just had a second look.
I get to go to a small show today so wish me luck on my SLQ hunt.
About 4 months ago, I found a MS-67 wiht color like this but was not able to snag it in time. This scan, and the reverse attached below, are from Heritage's pic. I am really looking forward to seeing it in person.
I was able to verify the amount of my tax refund, so I have some money to play with now. Time to figure out what to do with my gold pieces.

If you ever decide to part with that piece, just let me know. It makes me drool every time I scroll through your set pictures.

Rick T's cameo hurts my eyes with its exquisite beauty. I'm sure it would hurt my bank account even worse. I wonder if my entire set is worth what that l'il monster is. What is the grade on yours, billywls? Oh, never mind. I'll go look it up myself.
As to tax refunds, we got in the neighborhood of $2,800 from Uncle Sam. But it all goes to bills and repair of my aging vehicle, the credit card, etc. No coin money there. I hafta scratch from scratch for that Barber half and W/M Saint.
PS- happy SLQ hunting, Carl. But if you strike out, and can stoop as low as MS64 FH, I am still possibly willing to part with my 1917-D Type 2 (around my cost, which was well below Numismedia retail and way, way, way below PCGS trends), in favor of getting myself a whiter coin. It was the middle type you're after, right? If I sold that coin, I could buy the ex-BigKahuna Barber half, perhaps...
Now, just to figure out what I want to do next. I have some ideas, but not sure what I want to do to start. I can upgrade the gold across the board to 62 or better, or I can grab a Saint in 65 and selectively upgrade 2 or 3 other pieces. Decisions, decisions...
