Showing your collection to others - Do you or don't you?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,636 ✭✭✭✭✭
Occasionally I show coins in my collection to other collectors and dealers I know, primarily at shows. Other than that, my collection has only me to look at it.

Very rarely show my coins to strangers...family and a few close friends who I know are interested. If I pick up a new piece at a show I might show it off to a few dealers I know...but that's about it. Never coworkers or anything image

Well brothers, I been doin' this since 1964. All my friends know I collect. Occasionally we talk about it but it's hard to show since it's in the SDB.

I show my IKE's to anybody that'll look at em which is why I carry them around in my pocket! image

Actually, all you gotta do, in my house, is ask and I'll show you any Dansco you want to look at. That's what they're there for right?

All the big dollar items are in the Safe Deposit Box so I can't even look at them!

Other than family and showing some on the boards, nobody. The less people know about it the less they'll care to break in and look for it.

In person? No, not other than to my wife. I do like sharing my collection virtually to other coin weenies, though.

This is sad to me. I understand the issues and agree with them.

Yet, based on some of the images i've seen posted on this board...

There are folks posting in this thread that have the sort of collection that I would so much like to see. A little bit of me dies inside seeing how closely these coins are held and how i'll never see them. I would pay for that privilege.

I showed some of my collection to a fairly close friend. Nothing huge, but he had never seen gold half eagles before. His eyes bugged out and mentioned how much thieves would like to get their hands on this. I was not terribly happy with the situation, that was a minor mistake. Sigh. I need a vacation.

I only tell my immediate family and professional financial advisors about my collection. A few very close friends do know, but I'm nervous even about that. I will say though, that because one trusted friend knew I was a collector, about 15 years ago, sold me a hoard 2000 truly unsearched Indian head cents that his mother had religiously culled from circulation in the 20's and '30's which we passed to him when she died at that time. I was in hog heaven going through them and found some amazing coins including a a '64L, '08S and '09S. That remains my greatest coin 'find' ever. Wouldn't have been possible if he hadn't known I was a collector. Unfortunately, in today's society, we've got to keep this stuff secret, but we do lose some opportunities when we do. I guess the B&M dealers pick up what we lose.

I'd show it to anyone who wants to see it, problem is that no one wants to.

Only my wife and a few fellow coin club member friends. No need to advertise to the world that you're a coin collector.

Why show coins in your collection to dealers at a show? I can understand if the dealer is a friend you have known for years, but not just any dealer. If the coin is part of your collection and you have no plans to sell it that day, why show it to a dealer? Usually dealers are busy and don't have time just to look at a coin that is not being offered for sale. Plus some dealers don't even collect, they just buy and sell. The have no interest in your collection unless you are selling it to them.

I had a nicely toned Walker I was showing to a fellow collector at a small show. A dealer nearby overheard us and asked to see the coin. Then he offered me $60 for an amazing, blazing MS65 toned beauty. I told him, it's not for sale. He was clueless.

That's just it though, after awhile many dealers do become friends. Many dealers are collectors at heart and love sharing.

When I show coins to dealers at shows, it is to dealers I know and consider friends. Usually it is show and tell with me asking for their opinion on the coin. I do it only when there is down time and the dealer is in a socializing mood.

I've never shown my entire collection to anyone and most of my coins have not been seen by even family members. If there were some die hard collectors around, I might pull a gem or two out, but none collectors always want to know how much each coin costs and I don't like sharing such info.

Same here..all the people I know, have very little or no interest in coins at all. Some think that I'm "nuts" for spending the kind of money I have spent on my collection. So, I enjoy them on my own!

No one, including myself image , has seen my entire collection collectively.
I'm the only one that has seen my collection piece by piece.
Family is welcome to look at anything they would take interest in, which only my daughter has.

Close friends know I collect, but all they need to see are the Type Set Dansco. They all look the same to them, so they're more intrigued with the denominations rather than the different dates, MM & rarity of a coin.

Neighbors (if they are not close friends) are unaware of my addiction.

Only my mom and brother. They are no where near as interested in it as I am so they usually loose interest, especially in my yearly collection-it's hard to keep showing them the same thing with just one or two numbers different, there's little to talk about. LOL. They both enjoy looking at my older stuff and foreign stuff however.
