Photoshop tip on rotating images I recently discovered. You experts need not enter.

I used to rotate the image by trial and error until I discovered how to get the exact rotation automatically.

The best way to fix this is with the lens correction tool in Photoshop CS2. To correct rotation just select the angle tool on the upper left and drag it along something you need either vertical or horizontal. Easy!

In Photoshop CS and earlier (I have Photoshop 7) use the "Measure" tool. Find it by clicking and holding the Eyedropper tool and dropping down to the Measure tool. I also get to this faster by pressing "I" three times which cycles through the Eyedropper, Color Sampler and Measure tools, presuming you've unchecked "use shift key for tool changes" in Photoshop's general preferences.

Click, drag and release the Measure tool from one side to the other of anything you want to be perfectly vertical or horizontal. For added precision do this at a large magnification and Photoshop will automatically scroll the image for you.

Now go to IMAGE > ROTATE CANVAS > ARBITRARY and, oh my golly, the exact image rotation is calculated and entered in the box for you! Just click OK or hit "Return" and you're done.

You purchased the full version of Photoshop and you didn't know about such a basic function until now...? I personally would just use free transform, or, rotate canvas - quicker, easier, and just as 'exact'. After awhile you should be able to eyeball the degree of rotation needed anyways.

Hi thiggy. Long time no talk.

You were obviously too quick to want to rip on me that you failed miserably to see the obvious and the only upper case words in my post: "IMAGE > ROTATE CANVAS > ARBITRARY ".

Makes me wonder now if you even comprehend what I wrote, and if you can focus hard enough to absorb what I just wrote then you might find that the tip I am simply sharing with others here is as simple as rotating gets. You draw a line, click, click, and BAM, it's done, and perfectly too.

Edit to change 'bold' to 'upper case'

  • Oh, and no, I did not pay for the full version I got it free, with key, along with a boat load of plug-ins. I never messed with PS much and am only just now really getting my fingers into it and learning as I go....not that it should make any difference.

Photoshop has some great features, most of which users learn about just by playing with pictures.

Even the free versions are pretty useful. They just make you work harder to achieve the desired results.

I suck in PS and need all the help I can get thanks for the tip. I'll try it next time I have PS open.
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.
