A Trip to Washington Headquarters Museum, Morristown, NJ

Today I saw in the front page of the New Jersey newspaper that there will be a display of colonial and early US coins at the George Washington Headquarters & Museum at Morristown, NJ. I went today with my wife, and it was a very historical adventure. First of all, the museum is undergoing renovation, but they had one case with US coins and paper money from the time period. There were some large cents, a $10 gold piece, colonial notes, washington medals etc. Pics are below.

What was kinda odd....the museum had applied something to the coins, and then.....wrote on them with a marker or paint. I'm guessing it is for inventory or something. But I told the person who was doing the talk that it was a very bad idea to do this, and he agreed and said he was shocked that it was done.

Also saw a mansion where Washington and his wife stayed for about 6 months during the winter of 1777 or so.

The gift shop was fun, they had a replica pack of a vintage note and coin. The coin was the Continental Currency, and the note was a random one. They also had a pack of about 10 colonial notes. The coins will be on display for the rest of the week, so check it out if you can.

Writing shorthand notes or inventory numbers on Colonial coinage and early Federal coinage was actually somewhat common in the nineteenth century and was quite often done by museums. I guess it was an extension of the inventory numbering system used on fossils and other historical artifacts as a way to track and organize a collection.

Sounds like you had a good time with the wife...image
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

All my life, I've lived with 15 miles of that place and yet I've never been there once.

I should really get out of the house more...

WOW! Go tomorrow! The coins will be there, and they have fun stuff at the book store. Also you can get a tour through the Ford Mansion. What I found cool was, we were walking down isles and steps where George Washington walked! Too damn cool...

I wish, if it were for physics...

Thanks for sharing what's in there. I passed by that place so many times and had not a clue about what was there.

Standard Museum Handbook operating procedures is to conserve the metals usually with a coating of Microcrystalline wax and and every object gets a number applied to it for inventory purposes.
