There have been multiple issues of these and I believe they can be used in trade at scientific stations, however, they are likely primarily a money-making venture. I have a few of them going back over the years.

I have the one dollar... But not like the OP.

The note I'm refering to, has got peguins on the obv with snow capped mountains in the background (Peterman Is). The reverse, got more penguins taking a jump into the icy waters below (diving adelie penguins/Paulet Is). This note is made by the British American Banknote Co. "Antartica Overseas Exchange Office LTD". Dated March 1, 1996...
