Need a little help with refractor & insert cards.

I picked up a really large lot of mostly stuff from a guy who used to sell at the local card shows, and I know next to nothing about refractors, inserts, and parallels. So, I need a little crash course on what to look for on these cards. For instance, will all refractors say refractor on the back, and do some non-refractor cards also have the protective film on the front? And what look for as far as cards that are #d or die cut.

#d cards are usually pretty easy - they have a serial number (normally machine-stamped, but occasionally hand-printed on the older ones) somewhere on the card. Occasionally it's on a clear sticker somewhere on the card and not all that easy to see (and UD has recently put some in small sideways numbers on the right part of the card where they blend a bit into the design), but for the most part they won't be hard to recognize if you look at the front and back.
Not all cards with the peel-off coating are refractors. In good light, refractors are easy to recognize - they refract light in multiple colors, especially when you turn them slowly from side to side.
Not every refractor says refractor on it. Also, for some sets, the refractors were not parallels, but base cards (i.e., every one of that card was a refractor).
Get the Beckett Almanac (or SCD's Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards).

Numbered cards have numbers on them and die-cut cards are die-cut.

And refractors refract. BTW, where is Lee's Ted Williams pack?
