Wanna see what 1 grade point of clad Washington quarter will buy?

I had a 1986-S Washington in PCGS PR70 DCAM, as well as an SBA in the same grade. Since I knew that bringing the rest of the moderns in my type set up to 70 was economically unfeasable for me, and I still needed a few gold coins, I decided to downgrade the 70 DCAM coins to 69 DCAM and put the proceeds into filling some empty holes in the set. I'd bought my 70 DCAM's on Teletrade back around '98, and spent well under $100 for each. In the case of my quarter, I swapped with someone else who had a 69 DCAM, and he sent me a check in addition to his coin. To my eye, there was scarcely any difference between the two quarters, though I'll admit my old 70 DCAM had a tiny bit heavier frost. We both were happy with the deal.
So now I have a pretty DCAM quarter that basically looks as nice as my old one, plus I have THIS. Pretty amazing what you can buy by downgrading a clad quarter one teeny point, eh?

I also remember you did quite well with the sale of your SBA on ebay.
Are you going to show us what you did with the other "point"?

Here's what one point of SBA dollar gets (if you add a few circulating paper dollars into the pot with the downgrade money...)
Good for you!

Those are very nice gold coins. I think they are well worth the 1 point difference in your other coins. This is especially the case because if the many predictions of crashing prices for modern coins come true, you might wind up with the gold and the 70's!

Now get back there and buy some more clads before I tell your wife.
Hmmm... let's see (digs in pocket)...
A 2000-P VA quarter, MS62-ish. A 2001-P VT quarter, MS65, semi-prooflike. Beautiful.
And if I wanted to walk on the beach, I could do it for less than the cost of the two coins I just mentioned. It's less than 100 yards away.
Of course, I'm at work:
Nice downgrades!
So "spending" two points gets you 124?
That's the way to improve your collection alright.

Those look like very high end 62 coins.
Great work. I am betting that if you covered up the grades on 20 clad coins (made up of 10 PCGS 69's and 10 70's) and asked a sample of collectors to sort them into the two proper piles the results would be all over the map. And that is today. If you did the same thing in twenty years with the same coins I doubt if anyone could get it right.
