Serious Discussion - Do PR70DCAM coins exist?

Please stay on topic. This is thread is not about absurd prices, modern versus classic, clad versus non-clad, or mine is bigger than yours.

Just one simple question: Do PR70DCAM coins truly exist?

In my opinion, yes they do but not for every series and not for every date. For certain series, like the Ike in another thread, I'm not so sure. The larger the coin, the harder it is to be defect free (simple mathematics, larger surface area). But for smaller coins, say late 80s', early 90's JFK halves or Washington quarters, or silver halves and quarters 92-98, I think they do. Have you ever seen a beautifully struck coin, deep mirrors, caked on frost, graded PR70DCAM? I'm talking about coins where you search for a flaw using a 10X loupe to find nothing wrong? I've seen and owned these coins and I believe they are truly PR70DCAM's. I'm not saying every PR70DCAM graded by PCGS meets these requirements. I just think that there is a large percentage of coins for certain series/dates that do meet these requirements.

What do you think?

I just picked up the Australian Proof Lunar series Silver Dollars from all 4 years they minted so far. All 4 coins are gorgeous and not a flaw can be found anywhere on them even with a 20x loop. These coins are fully struck with full Black and White contrast. If any coins deserved a PR70DCAM these do.

  • To answer the question of this thread ... yes and no ...

Yes (likelihood is there) for any coin up to the size of an SBA.

No (highly unlikely) for any coin from the size of a Kennedy and up (seen a few Kennedys and Ikes that where truly not)

    CD,

What is the size of the Australian Proof Lunar Silver $ ??
    My eBay Items

I love Ike dollars and all other dollar series !!!

I also love Major Circulation Strike Type Sets, clad Washingtons ('65 to '98) and key date coins !!!!!

If ignorance is bliss, shouldn't we have more happy people ??
  • There is no such thing as a perfect coin. I do feel, however, that a premium PR69 DCAM piece should be allowed to grade PR70 DCAM if it truly is deserving.

fantasiize they are the same size as the American Silver Eagles. If you want to see images of the 2000 year of the Dragon coin see this Thread.

Sure! With modern machinary a perfect image transfer from die to planchet is no big deal. However after they have gone down the assembly line, been grabbed by robotic arms, smashed into an insert, slammed into a case, blasted with the sonic sealer, & mangulated by the forklift driver, many have ceased to exist. Then they leave the Mint to face more peril. But just look at the pop report; most modern clad proof issues have what, mintages of several million but only 500 have been graded? That leaves a lot to be uncovered yet.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
