Canada 1948 & 1953 year set question

Does anybody know anything (where/when/etc.) about how these sets were packaged? The 1948 set is in a black cardboard holder with mylar slides on both sides (like Dansco albiums). The 1953 set is in a white cardboard holder, wrapped tight with cellophane.

Isn't that original packaging on the '53 set?

I just checked the Charlton catalog- the '53 looks like the picture under "Proof-like and Brilliant Uncirculated Sets"- there is no price listing for 1953 sets, but it does say that "1953 saw the first use of the white cardboard six-coin holder", so it looks like that's what these might be. The '48 set does look like an aftermarket type holder- I have a second set in a similar holder that only has the 1c through 50c, with no space for a dollar coin.

I second (or third) the opinion that the 1948 set has aftermarket packaging and the 1953 set has mint-issue packaging.

I believe the 1953 set is mint packing... I had a 1957 set like this. As for the 1948, I would tend to doubt it. In any event, I would look very closely at all of the coins

looks like that packaging certainly imparted some decent toning, maybe colorful depending on the lighting.

  • The silver coins in the 1948 set have an attractive light purple toning- the posted scan is sort of crappy (I was more interested in showing the packaging than getting the coins to stand out).
