Need packaging advice

I will be sending in my mint shipping box of the plat anniversary coins for grading . I want to use registered mail. Do they have a box that fits the mint box snug? Do I get the box at the post office? Or can I use any sort of brown box? Thanks. Any other advice is appreciated. Thanks again

I've found different POs can be funny about registered mail. I'd recommend picking a box out at the PO so you can confirm that it's okay to send that box registered.....and of course, then you'll have to have all of the seams taped over with their special tape.

  • Due to the weight of the Mint packaging being over 13oz, the parcel will need to be shipped via Priorty Mail Registered. You may use the free Priority Mail boxes available at the post office. You must use brown paper tape to seal all the seams of the box, if you don't want to buy a roll, the post office will usually assist you since they have the tape there.

I have the brown tape already. I have Priority boxes, but they are all flat rate. Is that ok? The reason I'am asking is I want to have this all done at home and not at the post office. Thanks
  • At the post office they have Priority Mail boxes like these that are free. If you use a flat rate box, you need to pay flat rate Priority Mail postage which would probably be more than the standard Priority Mail postage.

  • You will also need to fill out postal form 3806 which is Receipt for Registered Mail available at the post office. The insurance is part of that form when you presnt the package for mailing so you don't need a seperate form. The Registered Mail number is also a tracking number that you can use to check online to see when it has been delivered.

If you have not opened the box from the US Mint already then you may simply cover any openings or gaps in the initial packaging of the box with brown packing tape and mail it without an additional, outer box. It will, however, still have to go Priority Mail even though you are sending it Registered because it is over the weight limit.
