Since we have many YN and collectors in their early 20's lets hear from the old timers

"Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it"

Since many of us were too young lets hear your horror stories when the coin market tanked back in 89-91. I think sometimes younger collectors forget that if you put a bunch of money in coins when you are younger and you loose your job and need cash, you can take a bath on the coins you love so much but have to sell to pay the rent.

  • Yes, people often forget that markets (including those for collectibles) can GO DOWN .... and STAY DOWN .... for a LONG TIME !!!!!

That is true. I saw a lot of my coins go down in value sharply then. Fortunately I didn't have to sell. Part of me now wishes we'd see another correction like that, now that I have the savings and discretionary income to aggressively buy into a deep slide.

The early 1990s were a wonderful time to buy choice coins if you had the cash and the interest.

Yes, I remember a Good 1901-S quarter being around $1300 to $1400. I waited until they went under $500 and then bought mine.

I don't recall key date walkers or nice early/middle date large cents being discounted much, if any. I'm sure some of the super grade specimens were hurt. The late date walkers in 65+ took a dive, but I thought they were overpriced to begin with, and stuck with 64's, which hardly budged as they weren't very expensive to begin with. Morgan dollars got creamed, but I was never into those anyway.
I recall reading the monthly newsletters from Ellesmere Numismatics, and their commentary that when the 'market' was at rock bottom, few people were selling nice, legitimately scarce issues at deep discounts.

We used to drink Blatz beer for $3.99 a case -- when we were feeling extremely flush, we'd spring for Red White & Blue beer at $4.99 a case!

And I remember those ads with Maaay-bel, another Black Laaay-bel!

Back in 89-91, though, I was pretty much out of the coin market. (My "out" periods were 1981-1986, 1989-1992, and 1995-1999.)
