What are your current feelings about ANACS?

291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,421 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have always liked ANACS but feel that their market presence has slipped quite a bit in recent months. I just don't seem to see as many of their holders at shows as I did in the past.

How are ANACS coins faring on eBay and in other auctions?
All glory is fleeting.

I do not hesitate to buy a coin holdered by Anacs.

For an expensive coin, I consider it one that could not get into an NGC or PCGS holder at the same grade. For an inexpensive coin, I consider it raw. IMO, the ANACS certification offers no marketing advantage to the seller.

Despite all that, if I encounter a nice ANACS coin that is either accurately graded or accurately priced (or both) that I would like for my collection, I would buy it. I just have not found any in the past couple years.

Their brand is so polluted with problem coins that even though I see some nice coins in ANACS holders, I don't much bother searching for them any more.

One advantage of their holders over raw is it being guaranteed authentic.

I send them only problem coins that will be easier to market if they're authenticated. I don't seek coins in ANACS holders, but would not turn one down. If you can grade and authenticate, buy the coin...

I think the company is overrated. I had some coins slabbed by them and knew the grade was wrong they gave the coin. Crack opened the slab resubmitted to Ngc and Pcgs and got a grade higher and 2 out of 10 coins got 2 grades higher. Mine you that these were Ms 61 and ms 62 coins that were upgraded. Lost many $$$ for that kind of grade hit.

Their slabs made some of my coins tone, I spoke with them on the phone and they said my coins had to been in the process of toning. Confused I said, same coins from same roll, yours slabs toned my coins and Ngc slabs didn't. Go Figure.

As I have posted on other threads...when the "New Day" campaign began, I jumped on the horse only to later regret it...

We can argue all day and longer over whether they grade better ,same or worse than other TPG's. It does not matter...their holders are treated like lepers by most folks at shows and on ebay. It is very rare to have a new blue go for anything close to bid...quite often, 20% or more behind bid.

Ironically, I have seen higher premiums being paid for old white holders...even higher than they received before the "New Day" BS...

I have sold off all my ANACS holders as I grew tired of the endless debates at shows...and hearing all to often... "Nice coin...I'd buy it if it was in a better holder"...

Sure...a true collector will buy the coin...not the holder...but these folks are few and far between...

As for RYK's post...problem I see with ANACS and also ICG is that due to their lack of market respect ($wise)
very few attractive coins ever make it into their holders...and then, if they do, they are usually crossed to PCGS ot NGC... hence a plethora of unnattractive coins left in their holders...further adding to the dim view of their holders... a cycle I doubt they will ever be able to overcome...

On a positive note --- My favorite coin in my DB Type Set is a DBH in an ANACS "problem" holder... labeled as EF Details... cleaned and grafitti... the cleaning is so slight with no hairlines and plenty of nice attractive toning... I have seen far uglier coins in the "Top 2" TPG holders... and as for the grafitti... it is professionally done engraving... a date placed in the field behind the Bust's head and in an arc that matches the lettering on the coin...it looks like it belongs there... I consider it "enhanced" as opposed to "damaged"... that's just the collector in me...image

ziggy --- I totally agree with you... yet I have grown weary of the 'fight'... for my own collection, I collect primarily raw coins and enjoy them as I believe they were meant to be enjoyed...

...but for the coins that are for selling...well, to use an analogy of sorts... "what good would a store full of Keds sneakers be if all your customers are looking for Adidas and Nike" ...

They are in a tough situation. They tightened up their grading stds, and are quick to label almost everything as 'cleaned' now. So what is the advantage? Slightly easier submission and slightly lower cost. But they do not and will not have the same cachet and marketability as PCGS or NGC. I'm afraid their niche is slabbing 'problem coins' aka authentication.

I like them, and use them for a lot of the coins I get certified. Their grading seems to be right on, and they are very strict with problem coins. In several instances, I've been told that coins I've posted here that were ANACS certified were undergraded. They also attribute more varieties than anyone, and do it well...for a variety collector like me, that's important. I think the reason there are so many messed up coins in their holders is that they are considered 'the choice' for grading them, and my experience is that a problem coin in their holder sells for a lot more than the coin would if it were raw. There's also a cost factor- their fees are lower than PCGS or NGC, which means I can get lower-value coins that I wouldn't normally get certified into plastic...

on an individual basis it doesn't really matter how we each feel about "the New ANACS" because it seems clear the Marketplace has judged the change to be a folly and a failure. my own impression is that for whatever reason, those in control of ANACS felt the need to re-invent the company to gain ground on those ahead of them, coinciding the new holder and some other grading changes with personnel moves and the location switch to Texas. i remember that when the move took place many of us perceived it as an advantageous one, giving ANACS a shot at more business with their neighbor Heritage and a correspondingly bigger prescence in auctions.

none of that has taken place, in fact it's been as others have mentioned, the reverse. it's time for ANACS to take stock of themselves and the result of the change. right the ship if it isn't already too late, hire some PR people, sharpen the company mission statement to do what they've always done best and go back to the familiar holder.

I still submit to them once in a while. I think the issue with their holder hurt them quite a bit until they finally resolved the situation.

Bingo! If i heard a "dealer-collector" say to me at a show: "Nice coin...I'd buy it if it was in a better holder", i'm afraid i'd probably burst out laughing and walk away. People like that have sullied our hobby by giving the major TPGs too much power to create the market, instead of simply following it.

I dig ANACS. I haven't crossed many coins to PCGS, but my record for ANACS coins is 2 for 2 in the same grade. For NGC it's 1 in the same grade, 1 DNC, and 2 crossed at lower levels of AU (one went from a 58 to a 53, but I bought it as a 50 so it was okay). I do my best to always buy the coin and not the holder of course...I like to think the reason some coins are in ANACS holders and not PCGS is because it's easier and cheaper to send coins to ANACS....maybe someone just didn't want to go through the hassle.

I've got about 15 of them going out to PCGS on same grade crossovers - the old holders, problem free. We'll see what happpens.

Recently cracked out a "problem" Proof Seated Half - PF55, cleaned. Came back PCGS PF61. I've always believed ANACS to be "net grade happy".

Same here. They had the tool, and they used it liberally.

I once had a gold coin that I purchased many years ago raw as AU, ANACS graded it AU details, Net XF-45, and PCGS later graded it AU-58.

    They appear tougher to me.

I had two old white holder ANACS coins that were cracked out for PCGS. PCGS called both coins cleaned and bodybagged them. So I sent them to "New ANACS", and got the grades yesterday:

    4048140 1878 $ 8 TF VAM-8 HOT 50 60 DETAILS (OLD ANACS MS62)
    4048146 1878 $ 7 TF VAM-80 CLEANED 60 DETAILS (Old ANACS 63PL)

But, to be fair, PCGS bagged this coin 4 times and ANACS graded it:
    4048144 1886 $ VAM-20 RPD HOT 50 58

PCGS bagged this one twice and ANACS graded it:
    4048145 1880 $ 2ND 8/7 VAM-9 TOP 100 62

So, bottom line, it boils down I think to opinion and who sees the coin when it's graded.

I love that people here despise ANACS and are so quick to dismiss them. I REALLY love that people are willing to dump ANACS material so far below bid.

ANACS SUCKS!... especially the real old ANACS holders... in fact they're so horrendous you should be selling them at 50% back of bid so that they no longer pollute your pristine Kool-Ai... err, PCGS inventory. imageimage

I will not hesitate to buy ANACS certified coins. They're not valued the same as PCGS or NGC and I can thus buy them for cheaper. Who doesn't like cheap and undergraded coins?

For my part, I would like to clarify... I do not hate ANACS... I do not share the dislike that others have... what I have a problem with is the market mentality towards coins in their holders...

As a collector I prefer my coins raw... as a seller, I sell both raw and slabbed...

For over a year I had MANY ANACS holders in my display cases... it became a running "joke" at the shows I do that I was the ANACS guy...

Sure, I sold a few...and some even went for regular retail $...

Yet, over and over again I found myself in the endless debate... and I grew weary of hearing all the BS from folks ... and worse yet... having these coins sit and sit with no willing buyers...

I will no longer consider buying any ANACS holdered coins for resale ...except as raw... and then I will crack them out of the holder and sell them raw... not because I do not believe in the holder but because I no longer wish to "fight" the Market Mentality... (or Kool Aid Drinkers)

As for my personal collection...I will buy any coin that fits my collection...raw or slabbed...and if it's slabbed (except for my DB Type Set) out will come the hammer and into my Albums it will go...

i don't really think members despise ANACS, i think that more than anything else it comes down to percentages.

i have found quality coins in ANACS, ICG, NTC, SEGS and raw which crossed either in the holder or out to the same grade or higher at PCGS or NGC. the problem is just that the average coin won't do that. on the other hand, i'm sure you'll agree that the percentage of properly graded PCGS/NGC coins is much higher than the others mentioned. that's really what's important, not that an ANACS coin can be pulled from the heap and cross.

A recent change in management did them wonders. They're now once again focusing on pefecting their niche in this industry and not trying to sell themselves off in a pretentious manner pretending to be something they were clearly not. The previous management team had visions of grandeur, visions they were in no position to fufill.

Unfortunately ANACS holdered coins are generally more difficult to sell compared to their PCGS and NGC counterparts, even when offered at a discount.

I won't hesitate to buy an ANACS UNC mint state type coin or UNC gold coin.....but no way will I pay similar levels to PCGS or NGC.

All I can say is try getting CDN bid/ask levels for an ANACS type coin.
For that to happen it has to be an upgrade candidate. Most of the ANACS coins I run across are saleable in the next grade down.

I don't think they are as good at varieties as they may have been in the past.

I found their customer service to be just fine (they called me when I screwed the form up (value one way but return shipping another...I was guessing value of the 1896s barber qtr and went back and forth on a few sheets and the one I ended up with was wrong)).
I am not impressed by their grading in the last year (have a few examples that I bought (bought the coin, not the holder...cracked out of the holder for one image ) and sent in a couple as well.

I think their "classic" grading is better than their more modern grading (silver Roosevelts)

    Overall, they don't excite me.

I purchased a large amount of coins in their old holders, and have almost always been happy with the grading and the coins themselves. I don't know much about their new grading- I haven't found anything yet in the newer holders that really catches my eye. Right now, I'll buy whatever I like in the older holders, and will worry about resale value some other day in the future....

I have a rather large number of Bust Series coins in ANACS holders, some even from the very earliest holder design. If I was confident a $500 or more value Bustie would cross to PCGS, I would pay for the cross. Submissions are a big hassle. Did I mention I now only buy holdered coins of any kind? It is too bad PCGS charges so much for crossovers. I would like to see them lower their fees a bit, considering another grading service already weeded out the trash. Give me a half-price bulk 100 Bustie crossover rate, and I am ready to submit. image

The new ANACS says they will not reholder coins that do not meet current ANACS grading standards. I cannot speak for moderns, but I do not believe this to be true.

The new ANACS shot themselves in the foot by allowing problem coins to be allowed into the newest ANACS holder. ANACS problem coins have flooded the market, thereby making many of us avoid even looking at ANACS auction coins, because most all seem to be problem coins. Heritage may have 500 ANACS Bust coins in any given auction, while only about 50 would be without problems listed on the holder. I simply refuse to buy coins that do not pass muster for problem-free encapsulation. image

ANACS still only lists Overton numbers on the holder, just like PCGS has started lately. NGC goes way beyond this by also listing much more, like Small 8, Large 8, Small 0, Medium 0, Large 0, Large Letter, Small Letter, Curl 2, Square 2, and so on. image

ANACS is the economy grading service catering to collectors wanting their under $300 value coins in holders. Any coins worth more than $300 deserve a better grading service. JMHO

For Morgans... I go ANACS in the OWH (original white holders).

They are typically well graded, rim toned and cost less than what I would buy in PCGS or NGC.

So I'm saving money and building a nice collection of coins. What's the problem here?

One thing I will say.. .

the number of coins in the OWH is dwindling and its harder to find coins in those holders that satisfy my collecting needs.

Coins in those original holders may someday be worth a slight premium or at the very least be extremely hard to come by.

I'll be keeping my entire Morgan collection in these holders and see what happens... long term...

I've quit buying ANACS coins in the new holders unless I can see them in hand. Their grading standards seem to have changed for the worse - below are two Trade Dollars in ANACS AU58 holders. The first is an old white slab the second is a new one. The second has been dipped until all the luster is gone and in my opinion should be in a net graded holder which it is not.

They have a second new holder this year which is a bit small than a PCGS slab. Also much more sturdy than the old new one. To boot the label is still on top.

I like anacs. Of the series I know how to grade, I can occasionally pick up a nice anacs coin and cross it over to PCGS for a pretty good flip.
