I would like to have a couple of gold coins authenicated and.........

there is a add in our local paper that this firm is going to be set up at our local bank to appraise and purchase (if desired) your coins. Would this be a good place to start. I have two raw $5 gold libs that are in the AU grade range and I really don't want to spend the money to have them graded but would like an opinion on the authenticity of them.

That's a new twist. Usually banks avoid having crooks on their premises - they are banished to the Holiday Inn to practice their larceny.

A truer statement hasn't been spoken.
  • I don't know how to image coins but its clear that I need to go to work on that right away, thanks. I'm not going to sell to them but I think it would be fun to go see what they say, I mean these coins are worth melt or maybe a little over so its pretty clear what they are.

I would feel more comfortable showing them to a local dealer in the dealer's place of business. Or perhaps someone on these boards (a professional) would take a look at them since there are only two, simply for the cost of postage each way or a small fee? That is probably the best way.

Get good images of them here and get their offer...but DO NOT SELL to them. Post the offer price here, and if they are con men looking for a rip we'll smoke 'em out. image

waste of time. do not bother with them.
get a camera and post some pics here. you will get your estimate
    from several sources at once.

they just want to sucker you in and lowball you an offer to see
if you are dumb enough to bite.

their ebay auctions struck me as crap.

    bigred,

you could just give us the date and mint mark of these half eagles
and maybe, just based on that, we can tell you the price of them
    without even seeing them.

for example an 1881P in AU is worth 175-225 dollars based on just
how nice an AU it is.

Is this anywhere close to you, or your bank? No idea where you are located. If so, I'm wondering if a principal of the bank has been convinced to do this by this firm. I really can't imagine a real bank doing something like this, but small banks runs by individuals or families could, I guess.

    I just wanted them authenticated.

ah. sorry about that. i misunderstood.

taking them to the local coin dealer and asking is a good start.
showing pics here is another. many people here can spot a fake
    just by the pics.

    good luck.
