How much toning (natural) is too much?

TexastTexast Posts: 1,899 ✭✭✭✭
I found this 41 D Mercury Dime in an old Whitman Folder, It's about as dark as I have seen, the photo's don't do it justic, the purple tones are quite deep, This also has full round split bands. The question is when is Natural Toning too much?

  • Looks attractive and colorful to me....as long as it's not black or a solid brown silver coin....I think this amount of toning, while not for everyone....is just fine image
  • those bands don't look "breadloaf" to me.

I have seen them dark chocolate brown. I think your coin is fine.

Toning appeal is a very individual matter. I think it depends upon whether the numismatist looking at the coin says "Ahhh!" or "Yuck!" when they first see the coin.
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

It's a beautiful coin. Send it in and have it slabbed. Yaha

God, what an UGLY coin! Dip that puppy immediately! Better to strip that coin into oblivion than to permit the horror that is toning!

The only good coin is a dipped out flat white coin.

P.S. If dipping doesn't work, you need to polish the toning away.

How much natural toning is too much? I dunno, but I've found that the longer you hold onto a toner and look at it, the naturally-toned coins look prettier all the time, regardless of the amount of tone. The natural toning process and the colors that result are indeed a work of art.

    Is this too much?? image

I would say when the tone is more important to the coin than the coin itself, then that's when it's too much toning.

I have a mercury toned similar to that one. Mine is white with lots of toning. When you look at it straight on the toning looks ugly black. But tilt it to the lite just a little and it is a beautiful purple like yours.
