then I realize I don't have my Amex (business) card linked to my Paypal account.

Called Amex to dispute the charge. We'll see what happens...

can you dig back into your head to remember if you sold something
for 40 dollars or about that?

makes me think of paypal trying to get money for someone
    via a refund?

All I can say is watch PP like a hawk . . . Giving out your account numbers is
    inviting a free-for-all feeding frenzy.

Odd, did you get an immediate credit pending investigation? I have found that they don't do much investigation on small charges like this. image

Who? AMEX? AMEX will bend over backwards and kiss your behind if you are a good customer. If you say you didn't charge the $40, its gone.

AMEX is top notice someone tried to use my card and they contacted me since it was going to a different address. Canceled my old card and had a new one in 3 days. Unlike VISA they are proactive and a well run bussiness IMO. I've never had one lick of problems out of AMEX, wish all the card companies were like them.

I requested a charge-back on that 1798/7 dime you sold me. image
  • Even though we don't take American Express, as their transaction fees are more than twice as much MC/VS/Discover, I like them because they never give up trying to give me a card. And they have really cool, very expensive TV ads.

I have the AMEX blue at 10.something percent no anual fee which is just as cheap as any CC and you can use it though PayPal even for dealers that don't take AMEX.

    Edit to add:

You can carry a balance on these like any other CC.

And you only asked for $40 back? image

No. Even if I did, where did they get my Amex info? I have a Visa card on file with PP.

Yes. They said the charge is removed, pending investimgatino which will take 6-8 weeks. They've always been excellent when it comes to questioning/disputing charges.

You can list several credit cards with paypal. I'd log in and make sure you don't have it listed there and forgotten about. ---Jerry

My experience is that Discover is very much on the ball as well. Back in September, I was in San Antonio on business and took time at lunch to go to Lone Star coins. I bought a couple coins for myself and 4 proof gold Buffalos for someone else. That afternoon, my wife got a call from Discover questioning the charge. I wonder how many surprise jewelry purchases are "unsurprised" this way.

That could be a whole can of worms, for the fun-loving card toter!

I love my Centurion card - one call to my concierge and stuff like this goes *poof* faster than an OT thread on the PCGS message board image
  • It's either a clerical error or someone "guessed" a working card. A few months ago I had some charges show up on my card from Google Ads. I would keep an eye on charges daily for a while if you can do that online just in case someone has your number and may hit it again. The alternative is to request a new card and cancel the present card.

There's plenty of software out there that will grind out numbers till they get a hit. Most of those shysters are overseas these days. If that were the case here, I doubt they'd stop at $40, though.

Is it possible you bought something for $40 from a website that accepts paypal and didn't realize it was going through paypal?

Jeremy - you and others missed my statement that my Amex card is not on file with Paypal. I only have one CC linked and that's a Visa card.

I'm dealing with an issue now where an online merchant with whom I had done business had their database (or whatever) hacked and credit card numbers were stolen. Someone then used my stolen credit card number to make purchases via Paypal. We discovered this by looking at our online credit card statement and seeing these Paypal charges. Perhaps this is what happened to you.

This happened to me.. Got a charge on Amex from 'Mark Paypal' and all contact info was the standard (official) Paypal stuff. I double checked my Paypal history and this did not match anything there. I disputed the charge and Amex removed it and resolved it in my favor. I really think what happens is that these fraudulent companies charge thousands of cards, and will refund anyone who complains... of course some don't and they make their $$. I hate to think that the fraudsters are getting away with it... I hope Amex goes after them.

This is heading OT, but on the topic of frauds -
Our company got shipped an ink toner cartridge, from a place no one heard of and to a non-existant person. I knew what this was because it's happened to use a few years before... I checked the BBBonline and sure enough, an 'F' rating and testimonials of people claiming that this company ships them one toner out of the blue, and then follows up with an invoice for a whole case of the same toner at about 10x what it costs on the market. In a large & un-organized company the bill might just get paid... If you call them (I tried and they only had an answering machine) what happens is that they say the rest of the toners are on back-order. We'll be keeping this so they can't send it to anyone else and watching for the bill... Scumbags out there I tell you...

Rockdogz - The toner scam is about as old as the Nigerian "help us transfer the money" scam. My receptionist almost fell for it when she got a call from "Your toner company." I happened to be walking by her desk when she was telling someone on the phone the model of our photocopier. I asked her who was asking and she said our toner company needed it for a reorder. I asked her if we bought from them before, why would they ask what kind of copier we have. Duh!
