What are the questions you have for PCGS?

From my understanding someone up there is willing to listen to us as the collectors and the backbone of the forum. What I suggest is we have a post that is full of questions. The appointed speaker of the group (Not even sure who that is) will then make posts to find the opinion of each question. Then after evaluation and discussion amongst the forum majority we will all come to a final concern that the speaker can bring to PCGS contact.

I'm not sure if this will work but I think it may weed out some of the personal issues we have and find out the real concerns, this way we do not waste time. Meaning, (And I mean this in the nicest way) We do not want to see questions like, "Why were my 4 Clad Quarters body bagged?" Rather we should be concernd for the good of the hobby and ask, "Why is there no code or process that better explains why a coin was bodybagged".

Do you see the difference?

I hope so, let's see if we can get some good questions, then we will open new threads with those questions so we can get a full thought on each question.

I'll go first.

Why is there not a better process of identifying why a coin is bagged?

Reason I ask: Since you are paid for the service we as collectors would like to know why it was refused the service that we paid for. When you grade a coin you give a specific id to the coin, when you bag and say PVC damage these is no pecificity to how you came about it?

Even if there was an additional say 50 cent charge for the info.

Ray that is good question, the members send letters asking about that very issue.

(More information on why a coin was bagged. (More specific codes, one for whizzing, one for harsh cleaning, one for thumbing over, instead of just ?Altered Surface?)

I am sure after PCGS looks into it we will get a response. Because PCGS does listen.

My question is why are there Varieties in the Registry that don't even show on the Pop reports? Is it because PCGS doesn't note them? Then why have them in the Registry. Or is it because PCGS has never graded one? Then why have it in the Registry?

    Example: Large Cents

    1794 ? No Fracbar
    1802 -No Stems
    1802 - 1/000
    1807 Small Fraction
    1834 Lg8 LgS LL

I asked this question Oct 26 2001. I am still waiting for a offical response.

    My two questions:

    1) Why are the SMS Kennedies listed under the "Proof" catagory in the Registry, but under the Mint State catagory in the Pop reports?

    2) Why are PO01; FA02; AG03 and GD04 coins allowed in the Registry, but the Pop reports has no column to show their numbers (or existance)?

    My question:

Why won't PCGS recognize Type II 2000 and 1998 Lincons cents and slab them noted as such. Everytime I asked this question the only answer I get is NO we don't recognize that variety but never a why.

  • When will PCGS recognize the Type I, Type II and Type III varieties of the 1972-P Ike?
  • I'll second ModMan's Ike question?

Plus, should sets that are 100% complete and retired be penalized in the rankings because PCGS changes the rules down the road?

I would like PCGS to recognize Type I/II obverses and reverses of Trade Dollars. Any difference that can visually recognized at 3 feet away should be fair game.

    My two cents.

    Several more.....

For DNC crossovers, put up on the web the grade that PCGS thinks the coin is at. This data is available but does not consistently go up on the web.

Even better; PCGS should offer a service (say $10 a coin) for crossovers. For those coins that do not cross, they contact you with the grade that the coin would cross at, and give you the option of accepting the new grade or not. This would cut time and mailing expenses and offer more flexibility and control over the crossovers.

Last one, for higher priced coins, offer a service which allows some interaction with why a particular grade was derived. NGC used to do this and it allowed the grader to write down why the grade was such.

While some of these are technical questions regarding the actual grading or process, the registry based questions do have an outlet now.

I just received my e-mail from Mr. Hall with his questions for us. I hope everyone takes the time to respond with good, solid, and fact-filled answers based on your preferences and experience. Nows the time to voice your opinions.

I'm not sure about the technical questions but perhaps asking some of those in your responses may lead to another operational venue to pose these types of queries.

  • Question for PCGS:

Why are modern service grading fees ($10) only available for 1970-date coins when the sets are split at 1964 for the Registry, old pop. reports books, etc.??

My 1965 - 1969 Jefferson nickels shouldn't take any longer to review and grade than my 1970-date right??

For that matter, why couldn't all currently minted series be sent in at the modern pricing tier regardless of their date? (Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Washington, Kennedy, SAC $)

  • Tim,

Hear! Hear! I just bought 5 proof sets, one each 1968, 1969, 1970, 1975, and 1976. To submit the coins, I had to fill out two invoices, one Modern and one Economy, because I couldn't put them all on a single form.
