Question about Japanese 10 Yen coins

Need some help from the learned about something.............

I am curious as to what year they stopped making reeded edge 10 Yen coins...........I am finding myself with tons of change while in Japan, so I thought it would be fun to look for some coin shops(none to be found locally).........I have, however, come across 2 10 yen coins with reeded edges, while all the others are plain edged.

Any help will be appreciated.

The reeded edge 10 yens were produced from 1951-1958 (Showa years 26-33). Truly uncirculated ones are worth a bit more than I would have expected given their mintages, especially 26,32 and 33. (At least going by the Japanese catalog--I haven't bothered checking the Krasue values). I used to find a few in my change too...kept them somewhere I think-- along with a very long string of 5 yens. Are you there for long? Which part of Japan are you in? I went to a shop in Tokyo a couple times. Rumor had it there was one in Yokosuka, but I never found it.

  • There are several very nice shops in Osaka, and dealers throughout Japan advertise in the JNDA catalog. If you prefer not to publicly post where you are, or will be on your journey, send me a PM and I'll try to locate some shops for you to visit.

BTW the last reeded edge ¥10 I found in circulation was in the early '70s. image

The early date unreeded edge coins are up in the new catalog.

It's a little difficult to believe stunning AU++ coins are worth a quarter and an ugly unc is worth $150. A lot of moderns haven't been set aside but in virtually all cases they weren't set aside in AU++ either. Perhaps this is an exception.

Krause lists the cu/ni coins of this era as being common in unc. Don't believe it. Many of these are even quite tough in VF.

Thanks for the info.........I actually came across another one today.

I am in Kurosaki right now, about 45 minutes by train from Hakata City, in the Kyushu Prefecture. I've been here about 2 weeks and will be here another week. So far, I have been mostly working and have only had the weekends to really sight-see. I've been to Kumomoto Castl and Kokura Castle and was wanting to go to Mount Aso, but it didn't work out.

The bus ride to Kumomoto was enjoyable.......seeing the countryside with all the rice paddies and the small villages was cool. Here in the city, I don't think they've got a square inch of space left.

I tried again yesterday to find out if there were any coin shops to be found locally.......still no luck.
