Can somone ID this?

I picked this up in a bullion auction lot. I thought it was a peso since it said peso on it (knowing nothing about mexican coins), but when I ebayed pesos from that year, this doesn't appear to be on. Can anyone tell me what it is?

It's a Mexican 1 Onza, or Onza Troy de Plata Pura - similar to U.S. silver eagle, it's Mexican silver 1 oz bullion coin.
  • Usually if you know the date, country or the denomination you can almost always find a pictorial match here. Be sure to search several of the listings matching the denomination as sometimes the actual names may be different (as is the case here).

Oh, okay. I have to admit, I was being a tad lazy after a long, hot day.

I thought the Mexican bullion coins were libertads?

I'm not into the bullion issues, but I believe the "Nike" design (libertads) replaced the one above in 1981.

The word "peso" means "weight" in Spanish, in addition to its being used as a coin denomination.

I'm not saying this doesn't have a denomination of one peso (I don't know, since I am unfamiliar with the type), but in this particular context, "PESO 33.625 GRAMOS" would simply translate to, "WEIGHT 33.625 GRAMS".

  • Onzas were minted in four years- 1949, 1978, 1979 and 1980. They're bullion issues, and have no defined face value.

Supposedly the 1949 Onzas did circulate as coins for a while.

I have one which is definitely circulated.
