    Very pretty indeed !
  • Lovin' that gold. I'm watching a BU 1877 up for auction now. Does anyone know if the 1848 A is a key date?

    I wouldn't say it is a key date but is certainly one of the better dates. What makes it noteworthy is it was the first 20 franc with the "Angel" design. Started during the period in France called the Second Republic. During that period this design was used in 1848A (mintage of 592,000) and 1849A (mintage of 1,303,000).
    After the Second Republic period Napoleon III came into power during the period called Second Empire. During this time 1854 > 1870 all the gold coins minted depicted the bust of Napoleon III.
    In 1870 a new period in France began, Modern Republics. In 1870 the 20 Francs again featured the "Angel" design until 1906. During that 30 year period over 130,000,000 of these gold 20 francs were minted.
    The 1877A coin you mentioned had a mintage of 12,759,000.

    Another comparison is the KM Catalog values
    1848A = XF=$175 / UNC=$500
    1877A = XF=$80 / UNC=$135

    The 1848 and '49 are among the toughest to find, but there are others of the type with much lower mintage numbers. And I'm not sure where you got those numbers Conrad but they are incorrect. The '48-A was 1,543,091 and the '49-A was 1,302,970. The two of the type with the lowest mintage were the 1888-A with 27,707 and the 1892-A with 225,706. That is excepting Proofs of course.

    I stand corrected ... I incorrectly referenced the mintage of the 1850A 10 francs instead of the 1848A 20 francs. image
    Also it appears K&M must round their mintage numbers to the nearest 1000. image
