1983 Topps Michigan Packs - who has busted some?

...and which will yield sharper cards - regular wax or Michigan? Anybody buy Michigan from Steve lately? Thinking of busting a couple of boxes.

    I only own 3 or 4 of these packs and I've had them since '83. I hope someone else can help you out!

    Wish I could help you Mike, I've been thinking about busting a couple of boxes myself, hopefully somebody with some experience will chime in.

    i've busted less than 10 packs in the last year. other than no wax stains, they were no different than wax packs.

    I busted a box last year, It seemed like the quality of the card was better than wax but the coalition was bad.
    Cards from some of the packs in the middle of the box were pristine, Cards in packs on top and bottom were average.
    Overall I would rate them close to rack quality.

    might someone educate me on this term Michigan Pack?

    I've seen it mentioned a couple of times here in the past.

    Goose: They were a test issue. Topps thought that wax wrappers could be eliminated by using a sealed plastic wrapper (sealed at top and bottom). Obviously it turned out to be a better idea, but they were just doing a limited test (in Michigan) in 1983. Some like the Michigan packs as a rarity, but I like that they are impossible to reseal. Steve has a case I have been eyeballing, but i may start with a couple of boxes. No wax staining means 6.5% more gradeable cards too (I think they are 15 card packs).

    Mike, keep us posted if you opt to buy a couple boxes. I know there was mention a couple of days ago about a group rip, I wonder if there would be enough interest to do a group rip on that 1983 case.

    Steve has the case listed at $2600, he might give us a little bit of a break on that, but at $2600 that would be $130/box, $3.61/pack.

    $140 per box of 36 packs. He's got a case of 20 boxes @ $2,600.

    1983 was my first year really buying packs of cards. I lived in Michigan and all we had at the stores around me were the test packs. It wasn't until several years later that I found out they were a test issue. Had no clue at the time (I was 11) image

    I opened a box from Steve last year. I found that the overall condition of the cards were better then wax. Instead of having one card damaged from wax, I had a couple of packs where all of the cards were damaged from the sealing of the pack (the top or bottom edge of each card was damaged). Finally, the collation did not seem any different then a traditional wax box. I ended up with most of the key non-rookie cards plus 2 Boggs and 1 Ryno. None of the key cards graded a 10. Most were 8/9 quality.

    Thanks packman, good info. Might be interesting to try buying but either way (wax or Michigan), if you're buying from Steve, searched packs not an issue. Might be cool to have some sealed ones, just to have!

    I called Steve today, but he is out of the office until tomorrow. If there are enough of you that are interested in a case break of this I will call him tomorrow morning and see what kind of deal he will give us and make sure he is willing to collect the money and ship out to everybody. I am having surgery tomorrow and have to check in at noon so if for some reason I can't get ahold of him tomorrow morning it will probably be Monday before I have more details.

    I might be interested in a box, if the price is right. I can get 1983 Topps for less than $130 per box around here already, although it's not the Michigan test issue packs.
    2001-2014 Topps Heritage complete!
