I am looking to collect world coins from a specific year - 1973. Should I buy the newest version of the standard catalog, or can I get away with an older - say 1993?
Then I would say an old book would be fine. The only problem you could have is if a country made 1973 coins after 1973. So, I don't think you should have a problem.
I think I'd recommend the new Krause if you're intending to actually buy the coins. You're likely going to be put off by the prices you see otherwise. Be very careful with what you pay for this stuff since the catalog usually lists too low but in some cases it's way too high. Grade conservatively and remember if a coin isn't obviously unc then it won't sell as an unc. Modern buyers tend to be pretty picky about grading.
If you're just pulling stuff out of circulation or from poundage then an older reference should be OK.
