1983 & 1985 Silver Chinese Pandas

What would the rough value of a 1983 & 1985 silver Chinese Panda be?

Comments

  • PCGS has only graded one 1983 as PR69DC and one PR69. 1985 has one PCGS PR69DC and one PR69. Either PR69 would likely sell for over $1,000. The PR69DCs could easily double that amount. The quality of these two dates is nowhere near that of recent Silver Pandas.

Grades in PCGS PR68DC and PR67DC are also scarce and could sell for around $750.
  • How about both as ungraded? Do you think it is better to have both graded or sell raw? Where are the silver pandas in the PCGS Pop Report. Thanks.
  • The price of ungraded 1983/1985 silver pandas is very very dependent on condition (as most other coins are). Some have sold on eBay - check eBay history.

Some buyers are reluctant to buy these dates raw as forgeries exist including forged certificates of authenticity.

If I owned a 1983/1985 and it was in excellent condition, I would have it graded by PCGS or NGC in order sell it at the best possible price especially if I was selling it on eBay. PCGS has a real/perceived higher standard than NGC and will sell for more. (I think it is real.)

Population reports for silver pandas can be found on the PCGS site under World Coins and then China.

The coin ID numbers for 1983 are 130810 (PR) and 389077 (PRDC).
The coin ID numbers for 1985 are 130818 (PR) and 389078 (PRDC).

Be aware that some silver pandas have 7 digit ID numbers which are not included in the population reports. I do not know if this is true for 1983 or 1885. It is true for 1984 silver pandas.

  • With only 10,000 minted of each date, these are very rare and often sell for $700 to $1,000 each. Here's a raw set 1983, 1984 & 1985 China Proof Silver 1 oz Panda Coins currently on ebay at $1,400 with over 4 days to go. Be very careful of fakes since there are many out there such as this one 1983 Chinese Silver Panda Coin Keychain (not real).

Since counterfeits are so common, NGC or PCGS certification is always recommended for early date silver pandas. Most world coin dealers prefer NGC since the turnaround time is a fraction of the PCGS time.
