anyone bid or win anything in the Long Beach auction?

There seems to be some pretty choics lots in the Long Beach world coin auction going on yesterday and today. Anyone bid and get outbid, or actually win anything yet?

Doug

personally,

I bid on a nice looking toned 1893 GB Half Crown and an 1887 GB Jubilee 3 coin lot (HC, Shilling, 6 pence). In both cases i was outbid before the internet bidding deadline closed.

I also bid on a Bull Head GB half-crown, which i am still the high bidder on! (for now, anyway; fingers crossed)

We put in $76,000 worth of bids.

We've still got a shot at $3000.00 worth of stuff, but based on the way the first $73,000 went....... I don't expect to see much. image

Sounds like a redux of the Goldberg auction.

I'm currently sitting at only 1 of 8. I'm quite sure that one lot with be crushed when the bidding begins............................BUT, I will be on the phone with Heritage "reviewing" two other lots as they come to the floor. image

Well, I was immediately outbid on one lot...

But I'm selling 4 others so everyone please keep bidding...image

    Nice coins everyone!

I won two items, both Canadian 50c:

    1901 PCGS XF40

Tried to get one of the 1960 Aussie silver proof sets but got waxed.

I wasn't even in the same ballpark on the 2 coins I bid on... Throw out the cataolog, and bid with the heart and eye appeal on nice looking coins. My bids were 20% over book and not even close. image

    JZ,

I really like the Genovino. I considered bidding on it but I decided to stay on the sidelines.
I'm in cash reserve building mode until probably the fall auctions.
  • Bid on most of the Hong Kong lots and did not win any. Many had somewhat unrealistic reserves and did not sell. They are now listed as "Buy It Now" on the Heritage website at the reserve price.

I did not bid on any of the pieces in this auction. There wasn't much of anything of interst to me there other than a couple of 1839 bronze proofs (a farthing and a halfpenny).

I bought a good number of coins for stock and for clients, but this was the only one I won for my own collection.

Republica de Colombia 8 Reales 1835-RS Bogota, KM89, deeply toned AU with abundant underlying mint luster. Very scarce date and grade. Most of these coins were apparently shipped to the Philippines where they were counterstamped for use in the region.

  • Thanks guys...

Just stumbled across this site, but have been collecting coins for a little while now (4 years)... Have got a pretty good colletion of modern bullion (mostly Australian/english), but am now starting to collect the more expensive numismatic items. Mainly interested in british empire gold, but have some nice world gold in the collection too.

I'm putting together a collection of "significant" coins, and good quality 1817 English sov's seem to come around very rarely. Good to get one in MS63.

Haven't received an invoice for it yet though... What about you guys? Are they normally a bit slow in getting them out?

  • SYRACUSIANSYRACUSIAN Posts: 6,461 ✭✭✭✭
You'll soon get your invoice, don't worry, congrats on your new purchase and a warm welcome from me too. image

You'll probably have a lot to talk about (among others) with MacCrimmon ,who has an avatar similar to yours and a terrific eye for quality, and cruzi, another Australian collector with a great sovereign type collection.

As for the Heritage invoices,(yours came from Goldbergs I believe), I guess that their priorities are these Russian proof roubles that went from 50K to $264500 for this proof 1839 rouble!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Larry, thank you, I wish that it was only thought that went into that fiver. I'm now going underground for an unlimited time period until those buyer's remorses are gone... image

  • Thanks for the post... Yeah It's a great hobby, but I also gotta admit it's time to reign it in a little until I've gotten the remainder of the finances back on track. It doesn't take too many good coins (as I'm sure you all know!) to blow a massive hole in the savings!

The most recent coins I've bought of note, are an 1855 Australian Sovereign, an original proof (PF66) 1967 Krugerrand and a beautiful BU (MS65+) 1870 Sovereign along with a complete set of Australian Type II sovereigns. Nothing serious numismatists would get excited about, but I reckon it's pretty good stuff. Have plenty of modern issue proofs , but most of that was bought for melt.

I'm looking more to world gold now, want to get some early english hammered, and maybe some decent guineas as well. Will most likely be selling off some of my 'junk' sovereigns to get stuff in higher grades, now that I've filled out my bullion position. Not too sure, but have got some nice books to research.

Oh great!! Another guy to vacuum up Victorian gold. imageimage

Indeed, a hearty welcome to Kryten2001 from this court, also. Good luck in your hunt.

    A gem 1870 sov. ??? imageimage

Oh yeah, that avatar is one of my babies. I lifted the concept from Wybrit.

And Dimitri will probably upgrade his entire 1833 Greek set by 2 whole points in the next year, so don't buy that "going underground" quote.image
