A few things I have noticed ...

Several weeks ago I posted I had found some cards and asked for some help. With the help of some board members I was pointed in the right direction as to price guides etc. These are all modern cards (late 80's thru the 90's). Well after spending some time in the price guides and offering things on eBay here is what seems to be the trend for these modern cards.

High end rookie cards will do well. However I do think if you can wait until the sport is in season you will probably do better.

Low end rookie cards are basically pigs in tuxedos ... you may get 10 - 20% of the price guide.

Timing, Timing, Timing ... This is key. You have to have your auction up fast and heavy. Again, BIN seems to be key here. You may miss out on a few dollars but if you watch the auction trends you can set the price in the top end.

One of One and limited sub series cards, autographs, game used material, etc. are sizzle and no steak. Yes, these cards would be nice however every company offers them in their products and some in several of their products. I am sure they seem like the greatest thing if you open a pack and get one but they don't do very well in the aftermarket (this of course does not include the rookie cards, again they do very well).

Last but not least I have found that there is a buyer for everything (one mans trash is another mans treasure) and if you really want $xx for a given card you may have to list a few times but it will sell. I also found success in BIN auctions. Reserves are terible and best offer is useless unless you want a bunch of people offering low buys. I think the hunter comes to the forefront when people see a Best Offer button and immediatly they want to see how low they can get something when perhaps they might have paid full price without it.

Again, I am just going by the very limited amount of time I have been offering the stuff I came across but this seems to be the way it goes... Please feel free to correct me (I don't mind the help image)

Timing is key however a little luck is involved. One minoe example for a buyer IE: Me, I have been searching high and low for a '54 Willie Mays well centered in psa 7, well I saw one that I put a high bid on for $625.00 and sure enough it sold for $630.00, about a week later I saw another and again put a $625.00 high bid on it and I won the card for $505.00 delivered! Needless to say I was happy although the seller was not Im sure, so timing with a bit of luck is key as well. Just my 2 cents.

Has anyone every offered for the seller to actually give him money to take cards of his hands like a 1000 count lot of 88 Gregg Jeffries cards? I do agree it is about timing and some other things.

Have auctions end on Sunday or Monday.
Have auctions end during non 9-5 work hours preferably at night to allow everyone a chance to be at the auctions end.
    If possible accept paypal
Don't try and screw people on 1.00 cards by haveing s&h be 5.00.
If selling a rare item and someone lists another just like it ending after yours. Cancel your auction if it is less than 24 hrs old and relist once the other auction is over.
Spell out exactly your terms and conditions before getting mad at someone. If you don't say payment due in 5 days for example you can't flame a guy for sending it on the 7th day.
Use the non paying bidders function to remind you buyers of their obligation, works better than flame emails.
Don't end auctions early as most of the action is at the end and snipes are set to go over in the last seconds.

    Graphix,

First off, I love the picture of "the villian" and checked out the link to the rescue site you have. As you can see from my avatar, my wife and I have a huskey. We have thought about either adopting or fostering another huskey. We have also entertained the Shibu as they have the same characteristics as a huskey.

I agree with a lot of your points you have made. I deal with more 1970s stuff and find the same situation. Since I have found NAXCOM, I have begun to list my limited buyer stuff on their site. In the few sales, I have had very good success. One example is a 77 Topps Mike Haynes rookie (HOFer that the card was off center T/B) that did not get a bid at .99 cents on Ebay. It sold for $7.50 on Naxcom. Since I am not hurting for cash, I can be patient and let them sit on Naxcom as long as it takes and the right buyer comes along. On Ebay, that right buyer has to come along the week you have it listed. And also have to have a second bidder to drive the price up. Timing, timing timing!

  • Alfonz24,

Thanks for the compliment (Akio thanks you as well). It disgusts me that people do not understand the beauty of animals (no I am not a PETA freak). One of the major causes of overpopulation and the euthanization of pets is people simply breeding for profit and then when the puppies don't sell its off to the pound for the sleep tight needle. Sorry, this really isn't the place for this but it really gets me heated.

Anyways, I will have to check out the site you mentioned (wonder if you can list newer stuff).

    Thanks

    Yup.

Auctions for non-hot stuff are a waste of time and money.

95%+ of my sales in the past 12-months have been in BIN-core or stores.

Auctions do drive traffic into the stores, however.

Most of the cards on Naxcom are newer. Search engine sucks at first and takes a while to get used to. This sight even sells beanie babies. The other nice thing is that you set your price and then can lower or bargin down with buyers/sellers.
