1971 Topps Munson, Grade or Not? **GRADES IN**

I also posted this card on the mail call thread...it looks really good but has a slight surface wrinkle top center above the "N" in Yankees and light surface dimple the size pinhead below Munson's mit. I really like this card, but I'm not sure if I should have it graded, given these flaws. Any thoughts on what PSA might think?

Put it in a binder with a 71 Topps set and buy a PSA 7-8. It is a good card for a EX/MT set builder.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • yep, would look nice in a binder.

GEM MINT + microscopic SURFACE WRINKLE = PSA 5

We've all been there - really nice card with 3 great corners, one bad one, and another flaw we don't want to think about.

I say take a shot at grading it. Ive seen 7s much worse than that.

    Yes, it's a 5, a very nice 5, but a 5 nevertheless.

As a '71 set builder, I'd love to have your card. It's one of the best action shots in the hobby, and in a tough black-border set... Cards like yours make me question the purpose of grading. It's centered, the borders are nice and has great eye appeal. Yet it would most likely net a 6 or so. image
  • Great card! PSA 6 probably, not worth grading but nice none the less.

    Mike,

Nice card! I picked one of these up from one of our fellow board members (bri2327!) a while back just so I could have a copy of this awesome action shot of a great player. It also has a slight surface wrinkle as I pointed out on the second image below. After paying for delivery, I ended paying as much as a PSA6 lists for now (SMR = $45). It was worth it to me!

if there is a wrinkle, PSA 5, however they may not catch it.

I'm kinda dissapointed...wasn't expecting this image

I'll have to measure it to decide if I want to try & re-sub.

    I'd be dissapointed as well.

    Still a nice card though.

On first glance, I'd have to agree with PSA on this one. If you compare the right-hand border against the left-hand border, you can see what looks like a possible trim on the right. Notice how the left-hand border is straight and perpindicular to the white border of the image. Then notice how the left-hand border is not perpindicular to the white border.

Why re-sub? Just buy a PSA 5 or 6 already graded for ~$30 and you will be better off and not out anymore money on grading fees. Probably should have done that in the first place if you had a definite surface wrinkle which typically limits a card to a 5 or 6 at best.

Just remember the key word is evidence of trim. That does NOT neccesairly mean the card was definetly trimmed, but PSA does kinda have to play it safe in these regards, if you know what I mean.

I am looking for a nice Munson for my Raw set. In all seriousness....Sell this card and purchase a already graded Munson 5-6 without wasting more money on the grading fees. If you would like to move this Munson I would be interested.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!
