I do not see any doubling. Can you point out the area in question?
  • Yes, it is listed in my files as 2005-P 5c CDDR-001. Congrats on the nice find. image

I see no doubling. If it truly is, im not very impressed. What happened to the true double dies like the 1955 and 1972 Lincolns? The ones that make you half dizzy when looking at them.

I see no doubling at all, how is this a DDR?

It helps in knowing the design of the OIV nickel. The doubling is concentrated within the center elements and is created from a tilting and snapping back into correct alignment much like the many listed MN "Extra Tree" DDRs.

This particular OIV was published in my "Die Variety News Magazine" Nov/Dec 2006 issue and is assigned as 2005-P 5c CDDR-001. It is also listed in CONECA files as DDR-007, Ken Potter's VCR files as DDR#7 and in John Wexler's "W" files as WDDR-001.

Brian Ribar also has a web site on these OIV DDRs.

Below are photos of the CDDR-001 with arrows pointing to the doubling. The middle photo is with a transparent overlay that shows the origin of the doubling and direction of shift.

Bottom photo is one of the recent new listings in my files assigned as 2005-P 5c OIV CDDR-049.

if that is the case wouldn't this be more akin to machine doubling? and not a true DD?

Machine doubling is caused when the die bounces or scrapes the surface of a newly struck coin. These new doubled dies are caused when the hub snaps into alignment during the creation of the working die. It is the only plausible way for a doubled image to be hubbed into a die during a single-squeeze hubbing operation.

Compare the pic on the post above mine (if i post in time) and compare it with the first pic. There seems to be doubling on the first coin above the letter "n" along the hillside / dirt area. Look closely and you will see doubling following the hill line... or am i missing something?
