What would you do with a 1981 Donruss set?

The first set I ever bought was an '81 Donruss BB set. It's been relatively untouched since I bought it. I know that it's not the most valuable issue. If you were me, would you remove all of the HOFers, check to see which ones looked to be gem and have them graded or...??? Looking for some advice.

If you aren't strapped for cash, enjoy your first set. It's what collecting is all about

I have my original set I built the first yr and I just plain enjoy looking at it no matter how cheap it is.Great memories of some great players of that era.

Great to remember the simpler days. I have the same set, and I remember the fun I had making the set. Not worth the grading (if reselling).

How does your Raines RC look?


I would get it graded if its primo...He may be inducted into the HOF next year.

You can buy them cheap now, sell it for double next year.

mine was the 86 Topps. Its still sitting in a set box. When I was a kid I put them together by team. I am too busy to put it in a binder. It is on my todo list though.

I've got a couple sets I put together, too. The year 1981 was the first in my second card-collecting life (first was 1962-1968) and I really enjoyed Donruss' cards. One of my all-time favorite cards is from that set:

This thread inspired me to dig out my '81 Donruss set tonight and put it in pages and an album. Since I just received 12 albums and 1000 pages from BCW yesterday I decided to follow up the '81 Donruss with the '82 and '83 Donruss as well as an '81 topps I had stashed away in boxes also !

Its amazing how these sets can bring you back to a time when centering didnt matter, a dinged corner meant it was well loved, and the only concern was finding your favorite players, cards with cool photos, reading the stats on the back, and so on.

A regular dose of collecting for pure enjoyment is great medicine

Thinner card stock aside, Donruss did a much better job than Fleer's first year. You should see how badly Fleer cut their cards that year!

I can remember that so clearly, buying up those back then. Trying to get the error cards from Fleer. I had the Donruss set in sheet form, bought it from someone out of SCD I believe.

I agree with the above posters - just enjoy the set more than anything. My first set was 1974 Topps and even though I could upgrade a lot of the cards, I like it that they are the originals I bought that year at age 8. First pack I ever bought had Phillies Danny Ozark and Dave Cash in it and those cards still reside in my 1974 set (even with my name written on the back).

Bind 'em. The sentimental value is more than the monetary value any time. The first cards I ever bought were 91 Topps, and I have been eyeing a vending case at BBCEX. Why else would someone consider buying 12,000 practically worthless cards?

I'm far away from Austin. I just found that pic. She must love Heavy Metal Music....... as I do. I live up here in Connecticut. The part of the country that spring and warm weather just never seems to get to.

I have a better idea about the 1981 Donruss set. What'cha do is buy ya a case of binders/pages, put the 1981 Donruss set in the album, then you go to BBCE and get all the 1982-92 Donruss factory sets he has. These nearly always give you higher quality cards than the pack ones (and only the 1985 Donruss factory set has the Tom Seaver COR version). Then go to Ebay and find the rest. Why settle for just one when you can get over a decades worth?
