Is there a stated print run for those cards? I remember the stupid Gold, Silver, and Bronze cards, but not embossed refractors.

Apparently he does. An Edmonds sold for only $16 and a McGwire went for $200.

    Perry,
I thought I was crazy when I bid close to $30, was shocked when I went back and saw the final. I thought you and I were the only Gant collectors left!

Hi, I think this has nothing to do with the winner being a Gant collector -- I think he is building a set of these cards. I know the winner well and he has VEEEEEEEERY deep pockets. When he sees a card he wants, he'll bid whatever it takes to win it...
  • aaaahhhh, I love 1990's inserts, don't you?
The 1997 Finest Embossed Gold Refractors DIE -CUT is different than the Regular old Finest Embossed Gold Refractor.

This is gonna get..complicated, but let me try..

    You see you got:

    1) 1997 Finest Gold (Rare..It says that on the bottom)
    2) 1997 Finest Gold Die- Cut
    3) 1997 Finest Gold Refractor (Rare also)
    4) 1997 Finest Gold Refractor Die Cut (Atomic Refractor Surface with the die cut edges)
    5) 1997 Finest Gold Embossed (even more rarer than the regular gold)
    6) 1997 Finest Gold Embossed Die-Cut
    7) 1997 Finest Gold Embossed Refractor (Regular refractor surface, NOT DIE-CUT)
    8) 1997 Finest Gold Embossed Refractor Die-Cut (Atomic Refractor Surface with Die Cut Edges, THEE RAREST VERSION, triple digit Dollar Card)

I think this is how many there are.
Surprisingly, the rarer ones come up on ebay more than the other variations. In my opinion.
I have the 1997 Finest Gold Embossed Refractor Die-Cut Mark Mcgwire card graded PSA 10. If you want to see it go to my Mcgwire Reg set at "Fire of Mcgwire"
  • P.S. the guy selling that Ron Gant listed the card as only a regular embossed refractor, when in reality it is an Embossed Refractor Die Cut!!
I am sure alot of 1997 Finest collectors knew what the card was based on the Atomic refractor surface in the scan. The difference between refractor and Atomic Refractor surface? The regular refractor surface is Rainbow-like, while the Atomic refractor surface has numerous tiny little Rainbow Squares that form a design. The fact that you didn't know what this card was means you need to read your Beckett again so you aren't stunned again. It's good to expand your knowledge about the future classic cards, isn't it?
Don'ts you just likes you some Jgarci?

dude i appreciate the info and you sound like you know the set so i tend to believe you, but if you want to tell me to read beckett again, then beckett disagrees with what you said about the set..

    beckett online says:

    1997 Finest Embossed Refractors
*SILVER ROOKIES: 2X TO 5X BASIC CARDS
    SILVER STATED ODDS 1:192
ALL SILVER CARDS ARE NON DIE CUT
    COM.SER.1 GOLD (151-175) $8.00 $20.00
    *SER.2 GOLD RC'S: 1.25X TO 3X BASIC
    GOLD STATED ODDS 1:1152
ALL GOLD CARDS ARE DIE CUT

  • The gold EMBOSSED Card may all be Die CUt, I have to check up on my shizzz. It's all put away and I'll have my answer tomorrow. Needless to say, that auction ended high because the Seller labeled it wrong. The collectors knew this and bid on the item what it was worth. Beckett is whack because I believe that some Embossed Gold DIe Cut Refractor cards have two versions, a Refractor surface one and an Atomic Refractor surface one.
  • I had a Silver Embossed Refractor of Tony Gwynn from 97 Finest and it had a regular refractor finish; that's the first Embossed Refractor I've seen with an atomic finish.

UPDATE: After searching for "Gold Embossed Refractor" on Da Bay, I found three cards that sold (all to the same buyer... deep pockets indeed... he'll pay $180 for the Gant but be happy if he lands one at $16, which is the final price for the Jim Edmonds he bought) and all of them had the atomic finish. I collected this set in 97. I have alot of golds and they are all die cut. All gold refractors are die cut and look atomic.
