Wild Idea On Coin Photography - Think it would work?

If you've seen those websites that have "virtual tours" for example a hotel room where you can pan the pictured view around with your mouse then you'll maybe get the idea.

What if you could take either a series of shots or a video clip of a coin being rotated around on its axis? Control the motion with your mouse?

Would it work? Has anybody tried it?

So like that California commercial........ "if you invent it you can name it!" therefore........... ummm....... "AxisView360" ™

  • If I recall, wasnt there a forum member that had several short .gif files of a coin being tilted in the light showing luster? It sounds very possible.

Jeremy (airplanenut) made a file of a toned Morgan that he continuously rotated so that the viewer could see the coin better. Of course, he also recorded the sound and you could hear the muffle of his computer fan in the background.

No, like this, but with a coin instead of a computer.

Halperin talked about this a long time ago. It will eventually happen & propel Internet sales even more than they are now.

someone did that quite well about two years ago here with a short 10-15 second clip of the coin being held and turned. it was outstanding but never seemed to go any further than that one brief thread.

    Not sure...

but here at school...we have these Wolfvision projections. They are like transparency readers but project normal paper on there. Teachers can put book up and it autofocuses and can be zoomed in really really close.

I always wanted to slap a coin up there and just take a picture of the projection.

Honestly, it was a lot of work, and still not great. Maybe I'd do more when I have more time, but I don't see myself doing many more unless someone sends me coins with a specific request. Part of the problem is the camera with video isn't my main camera anymore.

  • IMO, Theodore Gray has done the best job of this with Quicktime VR for his various element samples, some of which are coins. Check out this Vulcan coin or this tungsten medallion.

Click on the picture once to activate the control, then wait about 30 seconds while it all loads, then grab it with the mouse.

I have the Vulcan coin by the way. It's about the size of a dime in actuality.

Flip-A-Slab™ on ebay would work really well.

Of course, I'd wind up spending more. image

xphobe, I clicked the link for that tungsten medallion.

That was wicked cool, to see the luster cartwheeling and all.

I didn't get to read the replies until this morning.

I guess I need to get out more, there I was thinking I had an original idea. image

I think that as technology moves forward that someone will come up with a standard type of photographic displays such as those above.

    Thanks.
