Modern Sets: What is everyone completing?

I am 23 cards from finishing my 1997 Donruss Preferred Baseball Set (1 platinum, 4 gold and 18 Silvers). I was wondering what other modern sets are people finishing. I have no hope that I am sitting on a gold mine but I started this as a kid and just want it finished now. Kinda like reliving my youth. I am working on the following sets

1993 Topps Finest
1993 Select Certified Stars
1993 Select Certified Aces
1994 Score The Cycle
1994 Fleer Rising Stars
1996 Topps Finest (with all the cool gold cards)
1999 Ultimate Victory
2004 Fleer Platinum Football
2005 Cracker Jack

I just finished my 1994 Fleer Living Legends Football set

Anyone working on modern baseball from 1992 thru 2006, let me know maybe we can trade or help finish some sets together.

What is the silliest set you are trying to finish?
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

I would like to do the refractors someday.
  • The only modern sets I have put together lately arent even complete sets! I did the Playoff Contenders 2001 Legendary Contenders autograph set and the Topps archives autograph sets in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Base cards just dont appeal to me much anymore. I did try to get all the Allen and Ginters I could find to try and put that set together but lost interest after the boxes went sky high in price. Guess I'm getting old...

Allen, are you doing those sets graded? Those sets might actually be worth something!

Yeah, the Allen & Ginter set was intriguing but after opening 2 mini boxes I could never find any wax. For some reason I hate just buying the sets already complete. I have to put them together one card or lot at a time.

  • Currently have over 100 sets I am working on probably closer to 150 in all sports, all modern.
What do you need in 2004 Platinum football, that is one of the sets I am working on and I have around 50 different extras.

I am 1 card away from the complete Master Set of 2001 Topps Chrome Football. I still need the Black Vick rookie numbered to x/100. I think the price is subject to a declining future. image

Just finished a 2003 Upper Deck Yankee Signatures set, not including Cashman, Goodman, and Alexander.

I really don't want baseball cards of Jason Alexander and John Goodman. I would like to add Brian Cashman, but the price will be more than I will want to drop on a modern card.

I've recently gone back and started putting together some decade old sets I always liked. Back when 1-per-box was a real rarity, serial numbers of 5000-10,000 were salivation-inducing, and prices were astronomical.

I just finished the 1996 Upper Deck Hot Commodities with the fancy die-cut edges, and I've been piecing together the complementary Blue Chips, which were always a little tougher to find. The internet makes it easy, though, and the interval makes them much cheaper.

I've also been looking out for the 1996 Leaf Limited Lumberjacks black bordered parallels, which were #/500 rather than the base model #/5000. I haven't found any, yet. I guess they really have all dried up. The 1995 Lumberjacks might be something I jump into, too. I have the Piazza already, and only paid $40 for it back in the day (BV $80 once upon a time).

And like the original poster lists, the 1993-94 Select dufex inserts are nice. I especially liked the Stars and the Triple Crown winners. Don't have any, though I think I have 1 or 2 Aces. Need a Mussina?

I need to put together my missing UD Heroes sets from other-than-baseball. They had a nice run going, and they messed it up once they got away from the "spokesmen." I've also thought about picking up some of the 1990-1993 UD Heroes autographs, but even though there are 2000 copies, they haven't really gotten terribly cheap.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

I've sent in a few and have about 4 and 1/2 raw sets I'm slowly going through looking for gradeable cards.

I remember both the Blue Chip and Hot Commodities sets. I pulled an Arod Blue Chip the year they came out and actually traded it straight across for a 1968 Mickey Mantle in about ex-mt shape. I have the Alan Benes Blue Chip #BC13, let me know if you need him. For the fleer platinum set I need #'s 138, 139, 142, 143, 145, 148, 157, 160, 161, 162, 163, 166, 167, 170, 177, 179, 181, 182, 183.

I have a starter set of both the 2001 Topps Heritage BB and 2006 Set. I have never got around to finishing them so if anyone wants a shot I will sell or trade for Cracker Jacks or other sets I need.

  • morgoth what do you need for the 2005 cracker jack set i've got a 5000 count box sitting here full of them plus about 20 complete sets if anybody is interested in 2005 cracker jack. This was the first set I went crazy for in awhile i broke about 10 cases of it.
  • 2005 Topps Heritage - I probably broke a case plus of the stuff adding together hobby and retail... I want to put together at least one "semi-master" set (base + SP + non-memorabilia inserts + Chrome). I probably could also put together a set of '92 Topps Gold baseball.

  • I checked and I don't have any of the Platinum cards you need, sorry, wish I could have helped.
  • 2006 Allen & Ginter base

Love the look of it. Love it. Like, love it so much my girlfriend gets jealous (and rightly so!).

I've been putting it together by buying loose lots from eBay and the occasional bonus box here and there. Watch out for those "5 pack" and "20 pack" auctions on eBay. You just know they're leftovers after the hot packs were removed from bonus and hobby boxes.
Nolan Ryan & Edgar Martinez are my favorite players...

  • The only modern set I am doing is the 2001 Greats of the Game baseball Autos along with the subsets of Dodger Blues and Feel the Game Classics. For some reason I really liked those when they came out. Thinking of getting them graded someday.

Say, I happen to have a 1991 Stadium Club, 1994 Leaf Limited set and a 1996 SPx set (they don't really fit my collection's "theme") I'd like to sell if any of you are interested. As for the answer to the original question, here's what I'm currently working on:

1974-77 Topps sets in the best raw condition possible (my 1979 set could use an upgrade too)
1996 & 1997 Finest silver sets (I don't think the gold sets are in my price range)
1993 Fleer regular set and all inserts
1994 Ultra HR Kings, On Base Leaders, RBI Kings, Rising Stars
1995 Ultra insert sets (I have several I still need; just don't know which ones)
1993 Flair Wave of the Future, 1994 and 1995 Flair regular sets and inserts
    1982, 1993-95 Topps Traded sets
    2005, 2006 Topps sets

These I hope to eventually get from that BBCE store:
1985-87 Donruss Highlights, 1989 Donruss Traded
    1988-92 Score Rookie/Traded sets
    1985-94 Fleer Update sets
