A question for '39 Playball collectors

Any idea what these little brown spots are on the cards (currently up for bid)?

I've seen them before in other scans. A print defect? Natural toning?

I think it's some sort of natural toning or staining. I've got it on a few of mine as well.

Hmm, I'll have to keep an eye my raw Senators card. I wonder if the slab acts as an "incubator" for something. But why only '39 Playballs??
  • AN incubator? for spores or mold you are suggesting? not sure about that one..

Yes, something that occurred after the cards were graded. They wouldn't grade so highly, and without a qualifier, if the spots were present at grading, right??

Speaking of this issue, does PSA always mention "sample" on the slab when the back is marked?

Does anyone have a scan of a back marked "sample"? I have yet to see one.
  • Speaking of high grade Playballs, salesman*gitomer has been dropping serious coin on 8's and 9's (building quite a set). Spending 2, 3, 4k or more for low pop 9's.

Bid against him at your own peril....

I"m fairly sure the spot on my Ott was there at grading.
I haven't seen sample backs designated as such, I don't think they do. Mine are all raw though, so I"m not positive.

It's funny because when I was a kid (mid '70's) every '39 Playball I could find had sample backs- I thought they were all that way.
I'm pretty sure they were only available on the low numbers ( 1-115)

    msassin-

Thanks for the link. I had never seen that before. Is the sample wording a stamp or printing? I'm happy that PSA calls it out and just doesn't give a MK designation.

I am pretty sure that it is a stamp.
PSA has only graded about 90 some of the 115.
They haven't graded a Williams yet so I would question if they made every single one??
